Syracuse Crunch beat the Binghamton Senators Outdoors, 2-1!

Saturday afternoon was another date with history for the American Hockey League and for Royalty Tours who was on hand to witness it.

This post will recap the game and I'll do a separate post regarding this unique event.

As most of you know the Winter Olympics are in full swing now. A number of players from the NHL are playing for their respective countries in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

So with any major league hockey to watch, the AHL (American Hockey League) the top minor league affiliates of the NHL decided to stage an Outdoor Classic for the first time in their league history.

As true hockey fans know the Winter Classic which has been played on New Year's Day the last 3 years has been an overwhelming success.

With that being said, the AHL decided to have their own version of the Outdoor Classic.

They decided to do so on the NY State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, New York.

Here's how the game itself turned out:

In the minor leagues, fighting is more prevalent than in the major leagues these days. So not surprisingly a minute and 50 seconds into the game we had a fight. It was a good I must say. It turned out that was the only fight in the game.

It be noted the officials didn't stop blowing the whistle all game for a variety of penalties. As a result, it was surprising that no power play goals were scored. Neither team was able to take advantage on offense when they had the extra attacker.

Despite a power shortage a short handed goal was rung up by the visiting Binghamton Senators that tied the game 5 minutes and 9 seconds into the 2nd period.

The Crunch did the first goal of the game 6 minutes and 47 seconds into the contest. Alexander Picard got his name in the history book when he lit the lamp to give the Crunch an early 1-0 lead.

David Liffiton scored with 12 seconds left in the 2nd period to break the tie. The game wound up ending that way.

The home team came away victorious much to the delight of the home crowd.

It should be noted there were many Senators fans in the house as well being that Binghamton is only 78 miles away up Interstate 81. Hence this was the I-81 Classic.

It turned out to be a great day if you were a hockey fan.
