Royalty w/o 1/27 in review

In between the two Stadium Series games I saw at Yankee Stadium at the end of January, I saw the Nets play the Toronto Raptors at the Barclays Center. Our pal Vincent Ascanio came up with a much more appropriate name for it. He calls it the Darklays Center. The reason being if & when you go there that you feel like you're in dungeon. It's so dark throughout the building. There's no lighting at all around the ceiling that covers the upper level. They barely have lights in the first few rows of the upper level too. They shine the lights they have on the basketball court itself to make those who happen to be there feel like they're at a theater. They call it  theater lighting. People like the King & I who like to keep score of the game come prepared with our little flashlights so we can see what we're trying to write down as the game is being played.

On that note, Monday January 27th I wound up seeing the game with my buddy Sean MacDonald who likes seeing the Canadian teams play since he's originally from Ottawa himself. 

As for the game we saw, it was a real seesaw battle from start to finish. The Raptors wound up out lasting the Nets, 104-103 which put a smile on Sean's face. 

Tuesday night after work I went to the Transformed Madison Square Garden to see the Knicks play the Boston Celtics with the King who attended this game as well. 

As for the game we saw, it wasn't much of a game as the Knicks raced out to a big lead & they never looked back as they beat the Celtics, 114-88.

Thursday night I returned to the Garden. This time the Knicks took on the Cleveland Cavaliers. Just like Tuesday night, the Knicks proved to be much for the opposition as they whipped up on the Cavaliers, 117-86.

Friday night after work I met up with the King at the Darklays Center if you will. This time the Nets hosted the Oklahoma City Thunder. Unlike Monday night, this game reminded me of the two I saw at the Garden. The only difference was the home team in this case, the Nets got their butts kicked. The Thunder tossed them a beating, 120-95 to end the month of January.

Saturday marked the start of February. It started different then I initially thought it would thanks to my pal Eddie Pelle who asked me if I wanted to go somewhere for the day. I told him I would love to. Eddie was off from work & he wanted to getaway. His only concern was the weather. He told me we had a few college basketball games either to our North or to our South. As the week went on, he said that the weather was supposed to be better to our North. With that being said, He went ahead & he rented a car. He picked me up bright & early & away we went. We decided to go to Upstate New York for the day.

We drove to Hamilton, NY which is the home of Colgate University. Since we got there extra early, we were able to check out a Lacrosse scrimmage that was taking place at Andy Kerr Stadium between the Albany Great Danes & the Colgate Raiders. That was located within a short walk of the Reid Athletic Center where Cotterell Court, the home of the Colgate Raiders basketball team is located. They were hosting the Bucknell Bison that afternoon in a Patriot League match up.

As for the game we saw, the Bucknell Bison raced past the Raiders after a slow start as they defeated them, 79-68.

After the game, Eddie drove us to the University of Albany for another college basketball game. As we were driving there, we ran into some bad weather luckily we had enough time to get there. Eddie weathered the storm & he got us there safely. Upon arrival, I got to meet up with a few guys I've met from going to baseball games. I'm referring to Bob Deal & David Schaffer who happen to be Albany graduates. In matter of fact, it was a reunion of their alumni that particular night. As a result, Bob managed to get me into the special pre game party they had for them. It was called the Ferocious Feast. It was the 17th year they've been doing it. I wound up having some food & soda while I joined them briefly. Since I was hungry it worked out well for me. When we got done, we went into the SEFCU Arena which is the home of the Albany Great Danes. They were playing the Vermont Catamounts in their annual Big Purple Growl game.

As for the game we saw, Great Danes weren't anything but great. They scored a paltry twelve points in the first half. The Catamounts scored 21 in a low scoring half. In the second half, it was higher scoring but the Catamounts went on to beat the Great Danes, 55-45.

After the game, Eddie drove me home. I got back around 1:15AM. I want to personally thank Eddie for taking me. I had a great time.

That Sunday was Super Bowl Sunday. Even though the game was being played at MetLife Stadium in nearby in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the King & I decided to pass up the opportunity to. First & foremost, it would have cost us a fortune just to get a ticket. When you figure in the hassle & hell we would have had to go through to get to & from there, we knew it wasn't necessary for us to go. We saw Super Bowl 35 in Tampa, Florida back in January 2001. Since we both like the Jets, we always say if they ever get to another Super Bowl we'll go again then.

However our buddy Eddie Pelle did have a ticket for the big game as did some other people we know. I'm talking about Sean MacDonald who saw every NFL stadium this season so it was fitting that he got to go so did Andrew Van Cleve & Larry Peim.

As for the King & I we went to our friend Frank Anichiarico's place to watch it on his HDTV. 

As for the game, as you know the Seahawks destroyed the Broncos, 43-8. It was a nice way to cap off a week of games we saw that were mainly blowouts.

Royalty w/o 8/19 in review

Monday morning my missing bag finally showed up. The driver called me when I was taking a shower as I prepared to go to work. He left me a voice mail. Luckily I was able to get in touch with him before he left the area. He said he was up the block. Thankfully he was kind enough to come back to the house and he gave me my bag. I couldn't thank him enough for accommodating me.

I then proceeded to go to work after I took a week off to go the West Coast. I had to play catch up in the office all day. After work I came home and I made myself dinner. After I ate, I went around the block and I did my laundry.

Tuesday night after work I returned to Citi Field as the Mets opened a homestand against the Atlanta Braves. I saw my pal Sam Citron at the Rotunda gate. As always, it was a pleasure to see him.

Upon entry I got a Home Run Apple Bank which they gave out to the first 25,000 fans. I then proceeded to get my MLB Passport book stamped at the Fan Assistance booth on the field level. Since it was another Citi Tuesday I went out to the Citi booth by center field & I got my $10 gift card for showing my Citibank credit card. I then decided to use it at Blue Smoke where I got four made to order hot smoking Kansas City barbecue ribs. They were outrageous. A person who was nearby where I was eating them said to me and I quote "are they as good as they look". I responded, absolutely. I was a very satisfied customer.

When I got done eating, I went upstairs to section 516 where I was joined by the Royal Court which included the King, Vinny Ascanio, Alan Gimpel, Pat Gorman, David Sack, Michael Carson, Harry Schwartz & Jerry Caffarello.

As for the game we saw, the Mets got a nice pitching performance from Zack Wheeler as they beat the Braves, 5-3. It should be noted that Mets rookie Travis d'Arnaud got his first major league hit, a double in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Wednesday night after work I went up to the Bronx to see the Yankees play the Toronto Blue Jays. Before I went into Yankee Stadium, I stopped of at Foodtown a few blocks away and I bought myself a ham & swiss sandwich which I ate when I got up to my seat in section 420B row 7 where I met up with the King.

As for the game we saw, we witnessed history for what it's worth as Ichiro Suzuki got a single to left which was his 4,000th professional hit which includes the ones he got while he played in Japan. It should be noted that former Met Jose Reyes got thrown out of the game in the 2nd inning for arguing a called third strike. The game was tied at two until the bottom of the eighth inning when Alfonso Soriano hit a two run homer off Blue Jays' starter & former Met R.A. Dickey who threw a eight inning complete game but he got saddled with the hard luck loss as the Yankees held off the Blue Jays, 4-2.

Thursday night I came home for a rare night off. I was able to rest up and relax.

Friday night after work I went to Taste of Dolly's for a pre game meal before I returned to Citi Field as the Mets opened a three game weekend series with the Detroit Tigers.

When I got up to section 516 I was joined by Mike Carroll, David Sack, his friend Andrew, Pat Gorman, Michael Abrams, Bill Graven, Michael Carson & Frank Anichiarico aka Duck.

As for the game we saw, Daisuke Matsuzaka aka Dice K made his debut as a Met. He didn't really impress as he gave up five runs in five innings. Torii Hunter hit a solo homer and a run scoring single. Miguel Cabrera hit a three run homer and Austin Jackson hit a solo shot as the Tigers beat the Mets, 6-1.

After the game, there was a post game concert by Third Eye Blind who we saw last year after a Nationals game. So I was looking to it. Much to my chagrin, this performance was awful.

Saturday afternoon I returned to Citi Field for game two of the series between the Mets and the Tigers. Before I went into the ballpark, I met up with fellow ballpark chaser and Tiger fan, Mark Walker who was there too. I gave him some pointers since he was from the Midwest. I wanted him to feel at home here in NYC.

After we spoke briefly, I went inside and I went up to section 516 where I was accompanied by my pals Phil Butleman, Manny Morales, Marc Beck, Al Linderman, David Sack & Pat Gorman. It was Fiesta Latina Day. As a result, the Mets wore orange Los Mets jerseys.

As for the game we saw, it was a rematch of the All-Star game starters, Max Scherzer for the Tigers and Matt Harvey for the Mets. Max Scherzer threw six shutout innings allowing three hits while he did walk four and he struck out ten. He also got a run scoring double. While Matt Harvey gave up two runs on 13 hits in six and two thirds innings. The Tigers' bullpen shut down the Mets offense over the last three innings as they beat the Mets, 3-0.

After the game, we went to Donovan's Pub where they were having a grand re opening. Earlier this year, there was a ownership change. Donovan's is now better than ever. It turned out to be a very festive gathering as many of their regular customers over the years were there to celebrate this special occasion.

Sunday afternoon I returned to Citi Field for the finale of the three game series. It was Tom Seaver Bobblehead Doll Day for the first 25,000 fans. This time I was joined by Alan Gimpel, Frank Anichiarico, Phil Butleman, David Sack, Michael Carson & Martin Caamano.

I did get a special visit from fellow ballpark chaser, Bob Deal who came by for a few innings. He was at the game with friends of his in section 520. I want to personally thank Bob for stopping by. It's always fun to catch up with him.

In addition, after Bob left, another fellow ballpark chaser, Terrence Williams came by to meet me. It was nice of him to do so. He's from Toronto but he said he has friends who live in Brooklyn so he comes down here often to visit. Hopefully our paths will cross again soon.

As for the game we saw, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Miguel Cabrera hit a two run homer. In the fourth inning, Travis d'Arnaud hit his first major league home run that gave the Mets a 3-2 lead. It was short lived as the Tigers regained the lead in the sixth inning when Andy Dirks hit a two run homer to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead. The Tigers put the game out of reach with a seven run outburst in the ninth inning as they won the game, 11-3 which gave them a sweep of the three game series.

Royalty sees a Major League doubleheader with Dave Block, the Gratitude Guy!

Sunday afternoon the King and I went to Citi Field to see the rubber match of the three game set between the Mets and the Nationals. We wound up meeting up with fellow roadtripper, Dave Block who lives in San Diego. He calls himself the Gratitude Guy. I met up with him a few years ago and we've seen each other a number of times since. Dave is always grateful especially when he can spend some time with the King & I.

He told me earlier in the week that he was going to fly into New York early Sunday morning. He wanted to go to see the Met game with us and he also wanted to join us for the Phillie game that we were going to see at Citizens Bank Park that night as the Phillies were hosting the Cardinals. It was going to be his first time there. At first I didn't think we were going to have room in the car for him but since our friends who expressed interest bailed out, it turned out to be a golden opportunity for Dave as we were able to drive him to and from Philadelphia. He was very grateful that it worked for him. I'm glad it did too.

As for the game we saw, the Mets got a solo homer from John Buck and a sacrifice fly from Mike Baxter as starter Dillon Gee and four relievers combined to shut out the Nationals, 2-0 as the Mets won the series, two games to one.

As for Dave, I got to introduce him to some of the regulars who were on hand for the game. They included Bryan Gilligan, Vincent Ascanio as well as Frank Anichiarico.

In addition, I got a visit from Bob Deal who's another roadtripper I've met on a number of occasions in the past year. He came up to say hello. I introduced him to Dave. We got to catch up on our recent travels. It's always a pleasure to see Bob. He said he plans to come back to Citi Field again in late August when the Mets play the Tigers.    

After the game, the King drove us down to Philadelphia for the Sunday night game as the Phillies were playing the Cardinals. On the way down, we wound up stopping off at McDonald's and we got some food since we were all very hungry. We didn't have a lot of time because it took us a while to get out of New York. As a result, we ate it in the car.

We got tickets thanks to our buddy Frankie Centola who hooked us up. When he comes up to New York, we'll return the favor by taking care of him.

We showed Dave some royal treatment as we said hello to our friend Lisa Wilson who works at the right field gate. We told her we plan to bring the Phillies luck. She always treats us like royalty when we see her.

When we finally got upstairs we stood behind section 319 where we were joined by our pal and fellow roadtripper, Andrew Van Cleve who was by himself. He normally has one of his sons with him. He was able to enjoy the game and our company without having to worry about taking care of his children.

As for the game we saw, the Cardinals scored first as Matt Carpenter, the second batter of the game hit a solo homer to make it 1-0. The Phillies responded with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead after the first inning. The score stayed that way until the top of the sixth inning when the Cardinals scored a run on a ground out by David Freese to tie the game at two. The Cardinals broke the tie when they took advantage of a two base error and they got a run scoring single from Allen Craig to go up 3-2. The Phillies came right back as they got a pinch hit double by Laynce Nix that tied the game again at three. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Phillies broke it open as Ben Revere got a run scoring single that was followed by a three run homer by Erik Kratz which gave the Phillies the lead for good as they beat the Cardinals 7-3.

On the way back home, we dropped off Andrew who lives nearby then we dropped off Dave at a subway in Queens so he could take a train to JFK airport to catch a flight home early Monday morning.

It was great to see Dave and Andrew again.

Royalty w/o 8/20 in review

Mets win, 2-1!

Monday after work I went to Checker's for dinner on my way to Citi Field to see the Mets open a four game series with the Colorado Rockies who were making their only visit to Queens this year.

Upon arrival at the Rotunda entrance I was greeted by my pal Sam Citron. He always puts me in a good mood when I see him. He told me how much he loves reading my blog. It's rewarding to hear him speak so highly of writing ability. He said he loves how I go into such detail when I recap my whereabouts. I greatly appreciate his kind words.

After speaking with him briefly, I proceeded into the ballpark. I went up to section 516 near the top which was empty so I could take in the nice breeze that blows through. I was joined by David Sack, Phil Butleman and Vincent Ascanio as well as the King.

As for the game we saw, R.A. Dickey started for the Mets and he pitched well. He went seven innings allowing just a solo homer to Tyler Colvin in the fifth inning which tied the game at one after the Mets scored first in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The Rockies wound up taking the lead in the eighth inning on a passed ball. They added an insurance run in the ninth as they went on to beat the Mets, 3-1.

Tuesday night after work I went back to Citi Field for game two. This time I stopped off at Taste of Dolly's for my pre game meal. When I finished I got back on the 7 train for one stop.

As for the game I saw, the Mets hung tough until the sixth inning. That's when the road got "rockie" for them. They gave up four runs thanks to a costly throwing error by Chris Young which ultimately cost them the game as they lost again to the Rockies, 6-2.

Wednesday night after work I went to Subway for dinner and then while I was there I got Carvel for dessert on my way back to Citi Field for more punishment.

When I got into the ballpark, I arrived just in time to see some employees get honored on the field. In particular, I saw Rose Hussey, who I know. She was recognized for the great customer service that she has provided over the past 26 years. I've seen her numerous times from going to Shea Stadium and now Citi Field. She always makes going to the game worth while. She's always sincere and personable to everyone she sees. I was so happy to see her get acknowledged by the Mets for being such an asset to the organization. They finally did something right for a change.

After spending some time on the field level, I went up to section 516 so I could get ready to watch the game. Despite the Mets inability to beat the Rockies the first two games, I thought there was some hope because rookie Matt Harvey was starting for the Mets. I was right he pitched well for six innings. He allowed just one run and he struck out nine before he left the game that was tied at one. Once he left, the game took a turn for the worst as the bullpen imploded. Ramon Ramirez and Frank Francisco both gave up a pair of runs as the Mets fell again to the Rockies, 5-2.

Thursday night after work I came home so I could do my laundry. I was able to rest up for a short time too which was nice for a change.

Friday night after work I went back to Taste of Dolly's for a few slices of pizza before I returned to Citi Field to see the Mets host the Houston Astros on Merengue night. As part of the festivities, the Mets wore special royal blue jerseys that said Los Mets across the chest.

On this night, the King and I were joined by Bryan Gilligan and Frank Anichiarico.

As for the game we saw, the Mets couldn't do much on offense. They scored their only run thanks to a solo homer by David Wright who hit his 200th major league home run. Jonathon Niese pitched well allowing just three runs in seven innings. Jordan Lyles pitched better giving up the one run in six innings as the Astros emerged victorious, 3-1.

After the game we all went to Donovan's Pub to enjoy a post game meal which helped us forgot about the horrible performance we saw by the Mets.

Saturday morning I went to Avis to rent a car for the day so I could drive to Philadelphia to see the Phillies play the Nationals after the Met game with Bryan Gilligan, Frank Anichiarico and the King.

After I rented the car I went to Citi Field to see the Mets play the Astros in game two of the three game series. It was Mike Piazza Bobblehead day.

I got my bobblehead doll when I went in. Once I got up to the top of section 516, I was greeted by Steve Tepperman who was there. He came with an old scorecard from UCLA back in 2002 when current Astro and former Bruin Ben Francisco was on the cover. The King and I met Ben Francisco when we were in Alaska back in July 2001. We saw him on a one day cruise. He had a day off from playing in the Alaskan League. We also saw him play for UCLA in Hawaii in February 2002. We saw him play in the minor leagues on a few occasions and a number of times as he tries to stay in the major leagues.

Manny Morales was also at the game since he has a Saturday plan which includes majority of the Saturday games and this one was one of them.

Furthermore, during the game, I got a visit from Bob Deal, another ballpark chaser who came down from Albany to see the game. We got to catch up since we last met up at the end of May. It was nice to see him again.

As for the game we saw, the Mets behind R.A. Dickey beat the Astros 3-1 as he earned his 16th win of the season.

After the game, I drove us to Philadelphia. We arrived around 6:25PM which gave us plenty of time to make the first pitch as the Phillies hosted the Washington Nationals. We had a great pitching match up as my boy Gio Gonzalez was pitching against Roy Halladay.

Unfortunately for Gio, Roy Halladay pitched better. After struggling in the first inning, Gio settled in and pitched well until the fifth inning when he got in and out of trouble again. With the game tied at two heading to the sixth inning, John Mayberry Jr. lead off the sixth inning with a solo homer which prove to be the difference as the Phillies beat the Nationals and Gio, 4-2.

After the game, I drove us back home. We all had a good time in the City of Brotherly Love.

Sunday morning I returned the car I rented to Avis then I went back to Citi Field for the rubber game of the Mets and the Astros. I met up with my Cousin Andy and my pal Mike Carroll as well the King.
We got to enjoy each other's company again. It was nice to see them.

As for the game we saw, the Mets held a 1-0 lead until the ninth inning as starter Jeremy Hefner pitched great for eight plus innings before he was taken out. Robert Carson got the only batter he faced out. Bobby Parnell then came in to try and keep the game tied at one in the ninth. He gave up a hit to Ben Francisco which almost gave the Astros the lead but the runner Justin Maxwell was gunned down at the plate by Lucas Duda in left field. Parnell worked his way out of the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Ike Davis delivered his second homer of the game that ended it as the Mets won the game and the series, 2-1.

After the game, my Cousin Andy and Mike Carroll and I all went out to Met Life Stadium to see the Jets play Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers in preseason football. I decided to go that way I would spend more quality time with my Cousin.

As for the game we saw, the Jets failed to score a touchdown for the third straight exhibition game. Mark Sanchez played into the middle of the third quarter before he gave way to Tim Tebow. Sanchez looked pretty good. Unfortunately for him some of his receivers dropped passes and he had a pass deflected that was intercepted. As for Tim Tebow, he almost won the game for the Jets with his ability to make things happen. He did have an impressive 20 yard run where he made defenders miss as he got a big first down to keep a drive alive late in the game. In the end, the Jets came up short as they lost, 17-12.

With that another week of sports travel is in the books. It was an eventful week to say the least.

Royalty meets up with Roadtripper, Bob Deal on Father's Day at Citi Field!

The King and I went to Citi Field on Father's Day to see the Mets try to salvage a game after losing the first two to the Cincinnati Reds. It was Keith Hernandez Bobblehead Day for the first 25,000 fans. Luckily, the King and I made the cut.

Early in the game, we got a visit from fellow roadtripper, Bob Deal who came down from Albany, NY to see the game too. Bob was in Syracuse Friday night for a minor league game and Saturday he went to Oneonta and Cooperstown to see the Baseball Hall of Fame.

We met Bob for the first time in May when we saw the Mets play the Blue Jays in Toronto.

While we were talking, he said he was leaving Tuesday to fly to Salt Lake City, Utah for a week. He was going there because that's the only state he needed to see a baseball game in. His game plan included a minor league game there as well as Ogden which is North of Salt Lake City and Orem which is South of Salt Lake City. In addition, he said he was going to drive to Boise, Idaho to see a game and Helena, Montana to see another. He was hoping to see Sean Lucas, a left handed pitcher who played college baseball at the University of Albany and who was recently drafted by the Cincinnati Reds and now he's playing for the Billings Mustangs who happens to be playing in Helena.

Just like when we met up in Toronto, it was great to hear Bob's travel stories. I want to personally thank him for stopping by to visit us.

He said he's planning to come to Yankee Stadium in August. I look forward to catching up with him then.

As for the game we saw, Johnny Cueto of the Reds pitched well for 7 innings as the Reds completed the sweep of the Mets, 3-1.

Royalty returns to Toronto to see baseball at the Rogers Centre with fellow roadtrippers!

After spending the night in the Buffalo area, the King and I got up and we arranged to meet up with fellow roadtripper Andrew Kulyk from the Ultimate Sports Road Trip aka USRT. His travel partner, Peter Farrell was stuck working so he couldn't join us for the afternoon festivities North of the Border.

Before we left we ate breakfast together at a place that was perfect for the King and I. I'm referring to the Royal Restaurant as it's called which is right across the street from the Super 8 we stayed at. We ate there once before on a previous trip to Buffalo back in November 2011 so it was replay time.

After we ate, I drove Andrew and the King up to Toronto where we were meeting up with more fellow roadtrippers. We got to see our pal Bryan Gilligan who was there, along with Sean MacDonald who just moved to Singapore from Japan, his buddy Peter Sharp who he knows from Ottawa where he grew up, Eddie Pelle and Fredy Sanchez were present and accounted for and I got to meet up with another ballpark chaser named Bob Deal who was from Albany, NY. He was kind enough to meet us in section 525 which is behind home plate. I want to personally thank Bob for coming up since he had a seat with his friend on the lower level. It was an absolute pleasure to meet and greet another fellow sports fan. He happens to be a big Met fan. He plans to see some games at Citi Field when he comes down to visit his family on Long Island he said. We got to talk for a few innings. Bob has a great resume of sports travel under his belt. He said he prefers going to minor league and college baseball games. In matter of fact, in June he said he's going to see baseball played in the state of Utah for the very first time. He said and I quote "that's the last state that I haven't seen a baseball game in." Bob appeared to be a little older than me. It's always great to have the opportunity to cross paths with people who share the same interest and desire to do what we love to do.
I plan to see Bob more often in the future. He's just another example why it's always worth taking a ride to a ballpark because you never know what or who you're going to see on a given day or night.

As for the game we saw, most of us being Met fans it didn't turn out for the way we hoped it would. On the other hand though, as baseball fans we saw a dominant performance by Blue Jays' pitcher Brandon Morrow who shut the Mets down. He threw a complete game three hit shutout as the Blue Jays blanked the Mets, 2-0. More importantly, he did so in a very timely fashion. The game lasted a mere two hours and twelve minutes which gave us plenty of time to get back to Buffalo for the night cap if you will at Coca Cola Field in downtown Buffalo which is the home of the Buffalo Bisons, the Triple A affiliate of the Mets.
