Royalty sees baseball doubleheader in Reading, PA & Baltimore in June!‏

The King & I drove to Carlisle, PA after we left Cincinnati Sunday night, June 8th. We spent the night at a Travelodge there which put us a little over an hour away from Reading. Since we ate so well at the Champions Club at Great American Ballpark, we didn't need to stop to eat along the way. That worked out well since we had to get to Reading, PA aka Baseballtown early Monday morning for their traditional 9:35AM game at First Energy Stadium. Back in February we stopped by the ballpark which was covered by snow. We knew when June 9th rolled around that we would be back there for that game. True to our word, there we were. I decided to take that day off from work so I could make it. That day the Reading Fightin Phils, the Phillies Double A affiliate in the Eastern League hosted the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the San Francisco Giants farm team. Upon arrival when we got inside in front of the press box, we saw our pal Bryan Gilligan who drove himself there from Westchester, NY where he lives. As always, it was nice to see him again.

Here I am in February & in June
First pitch 9:36AM
As for the game we saw, the Fightin Phils took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Flying Squirrels answered right back with four in the top of the second inning. They extended their lead to 5-2 with a run in the third inning before the Fightin Phils fought back. They scored two in the bottom of the sixth, they tied it with a run in the seventh ‎& they capped off the comeback with a three run double by right fielder Peter Lavin in the bottom of the eighth as he wound up being the hero as the Fightin Phils went on to defeat the Flying Squirrels, 8-5.

After the game, the King ‎& I drove towards Baltimore where we saw another baseball game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards as the Orioles opened a series with their division rival, the Boston Red Sox. On the way there, we stopped off in Lancaster, PA. By doing so, I got to visit my parents for an hour or so. It worked well since we had some time to kill & it was right on the way. I'm glad I got to spent some precious time with them.  After we said our goodbyes, we continued on to Baltimore.

On our way to Baltimore we ran into some rush hour traffic which delayed us twenty minutes to a half hour. With that being said, we wound up parking the car on the street in the neighborhood shortly after 5PM. The King & I were hungry so we stopped off at Pickles Pub which is right across the street from the ballpark for dinner. ‎Luckily we were able to get a table since it was jam packed. I had grilled tuna along with some chicken wings. We also had a pitcher of a pale ale beer. It was our first time there. I've heard good things about it. We hope to go back there someday if & when time allows.

When we got done, we walked over to Oriole Park ‎ & we went inside to see the game. We had tickets in advance so it made for an easy entry. Upon arrival, we went up to section 336 which is right behind home plate. We wound up meeting our friend Phil Butleman there. He was supposed to join us for the weekend but he bailed out at the last minute. He took Greyhound down there. We gave him a ride home. It was good to see him again.

View from Section 336
As for the game we saw, it was a quick one for a change. We saw a well pitched game by Orioles' starter Bud Norris who allowed three hits over eight shutout innings. He got some offensive support thanks to the long ball. His teammates supplied the power as Adam Jones hit a solo homer in the first inning, Nick Markakis added a two run blast in the fifth & Ryan Flaherty rounded out the scoring with a solo shot in the seventh inning. They all came against Red Sox starter & loser Jake Peavy who pitched pretty well. The Orioles beat the Red Sox, 4-0 in a mere two hours & twenty one minutes. That's just what I needed since I was getting up early to go back to work that Tuesday morning.

Stay tuned as I fast forward to the end of June when I got to take a break from seeing a sporting event.

Thank you for reading & following along.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

Royalty goes to Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati & meets up with some special people!‏

After the King & I left Pittsburgh Saturday night after the Pirate game, we drove to Columbus, Ohio where we spent the night at Travelodge. On the way there, we stopped off for dinner at Eat' N Park in Washington, Pennsylvania. I wound up having a seafood dinner along with their salad & soup bar while the King had chicken strips. After we finished eating we continued on to Columbus which put us 110 miles from the Queen City of Cincinnati.

Molly, Me & Kathy McKee
My official stamp at GABP
We got up Sunday morning ‎& we drove to Great American Ballpark to see the Cincinnati Reds host the Philadelphia Phillies that afternoon. We wound up parking the car on the street in downtown around 11AM. I walked ahead of the King. He told me he'll catch up since I had to go to the VIP Concierge desk to pick up the Champions Club tickets that my pal & founder of the MLB Pass-Port book, Tim Parks left for us in my name.  After I got them, I walked outside to wait for the King. Shortly thereafter, I got to meet & greet a few special people who came to the game special to meet & greet me. They were Kathy McKee & her daughter Molly. They're big Reds fans & they also love having their Pass-Port books. They have a half season ticket package but this particular game wasn't part of their plan. Kathy told me that she had rainchecks from other games that she needed to exchange. With that being said, she wound up getting seats in the upper level which were right above us in section 427. The King & I were sitting with Tim in section 227 which was just to the right of home plate. A few minutes after I met them, the King came along. Without further adieu, I introduced them to him. We then proceeded to go inside through the season ticket holder entrance. When we got inside the King said he'll meet me in the Club. In the meantime, I got to spend some quality time with the ladies. We wound up going all the way down by the Reds dugout so we could take a picture together. A lady who was nearby was kind enough to do the honors for us. Thankfully it came out really nice. After we spoke for a little while we walked back up to the concourse so we could get our Pass-Port books stamped at guest services which is one of the seven locations that had the stamp. More importantly, I needed to show Kathy my trick to getting my stamp in the strike zone as she calls it. She claims  that the stamp at GABP is off center. That may be true because my stamp was slightly off LOL. Regardless with my influence her stamp came out really good. I was impressed. Based on her track record, she was on the mark in my book. I hope she continues to improve her ability to get it in the zone. I told her practice makes perfect. After plenty of tries, my stamping ability is excellent. A year ago when I first got my book, I was afraid to do it myself. Nowadays I don't let the people who work at the ballpark do it, I do it myself. After we finished getting validated, we walked over to the entrance to the Champions Club, where we said our goodbyes. I thanked Kathy & Molly for taking some of their precious time to come to meet me. It may have been short but it was sweet.

My meal at the Champions Club
I proceeded to take the elevator up to the Club level. They put a wristband on my wrist which allowed me to indulge in the all you can eat food they offer their premium guests there. Kathy gave me fair warning so I made sure I brought my appetite. I wound up having pulled pork from Montgomery Inn, a few slices of LaRosa's pizza, potato chips & cinnamon covered pretzels which Kathy told me were a must‎. She was so right. They were outrageous. I also had countless cups of water. The King had a few burgers & kielbasa. All in all, we enjoyed the privilege that Tim gave us. When we finished eating we went to our seats. Shortly thereafter, Tim arrived. We thanked him for the royal treatment he gave us. We enjoyed talking to him during the game. We even got a surprise when we were shown on the jumbo tron during the game. Apparently Tim waved his magic wand & he made it happen. It was really cool. Kathy saw us & she wrote me a text to let me know.

The King & I with Tim Parks on the Jumbo Tron at GABP
As for the game we saw, the Reds fall behind early 1-0, but starter Homer Bailey wound up pitching a great game & he helped himself out by giving him ‎& his team the lead 2-1 with a two run single in the bottom of the fifth inning. That was followed by a two run homer by Billy Hamilton. It should noted that the King decided to get his brand new MLB Pass-Port book stamped at that time. He said to himself, he won't hit a home run. It never fails, the King misses the slight bit of action & sure enough something special happens. His timing in that regard is impeccable. The Reds wound up winning the game, 4-1 as Homer Bailey went eight innings & closer Aroldis Chapman blew away the Phillies by striking out the side in the ninth inning to preserve the victory.

Me, Sandy Helton Smith & The King at GABP
When the King & I headed out of the Club to leave the ballpark we were greeted by a few more special ladies. They were Sandy Helton Smith ‎& her co-worker Marie Murphy. They're big Pass-port fans too. Ironically last October when I went to Nashville I met a young man named Tyler Garret Smith who happens to be Sandy's son. He told me when I met him that his mother knew Tim Parks. What a coincidence it was. Sandy was so happy & honored to meet the King & I. We only got to talk for a short time since we had to hit the road because we had a long ride ahead of us. Regardless it was time well spent.
Stay tuned for the recap of the rest of the journey.

Thank you for reading & following along.

Royalty goes to PNC Park in Pittsburgh over first weekend in June!‏

When the baseball schedule came out last September, I knew that the weekend of June 7th & 8th, the Mets & Yankees were both going to be away. With that being said, I needed to figure out a way to maximize my time off that weekend. Since the Pirates were slated to play a 4:05PM game that Saturday afternoon against the Milwaukee Brewers at PNC Park, I thought that would be a good building block.

As it got closer, I arranged to get the King a car rental for a week a few days before that weekend started. He always needs to see as many games as humanly possible. Since there were a few minor league games within driving distance that he could get to, he told me to make him a reservation. ‎I checked out the rates online. I was able to get a really good deal from Dollar Rent A Car by LaGuardia Airport so I went ahead & booked it for him. He wound up getting a Ford Focus which sufficed. While I was working & home relaxing for a few nights, the King was driving around. He wound up going to Baltimore that Friday night to see the Orioles play the Athletics at Camden Yards. Since I was really busy that week at work, I couldn't take off that Friday to join him. He told me that he would be willing to drive back home to pick me up. As crazy as it sounds, he did indeed.

I got up early Saturday morning & I got ready to hit the road. We wound up leaving the house around 8:30AM. ‎We drove 400 miles before we arrived in Pittsburgh just before 3PM that afternoon. We made a stop for gas & some made to order food at Sheetz in Brookville, Pennsylvania. We then continued on Route 28 for another 80 miles until we arrived at Cedar Avenue which is where that road ends in Pittsburgh. We went up a few blocks & we turned the car around & we parked on the street. We fed the pay by license plate multi space meter that they recently installed there which replaced the old meters they used to use.  We locked the car & we proceeded to take the short walk over to the ballpark.

Collage of my latest PNC Park visit
When we got inside I told the King I'll meet behind home plate on the lower level around game time. By doing so, I was able to wander around. I went downstairs so I could take a picture then I went to the team store behind home plate so I could get my brand new 25 game MLB Pass-Port book stamped before it got too crowded. After that, I walked ‎out to the area on the concourse behind right field. As a result, I got to see former Pirate Manny Sanguillen who played for them back in the '70's. He has his own barbecue stand called Manny's BBQ.

After a brief stop there, I made my way to the Pirate bullpen out in left field. I went there to see my pal Jason Grilli aka Grill Cheese who was still a Pirate at the time. A few weeks ago he got traded to the Angels. I told Jason I hope to see him pitch. Thanks to a lady I know, JeanAnn Harrison, I've gotten to meet Jason on a number of occasions. She's a business partner of his. Jason is a preserver. He has fought back from numerous injuries to get back to the major leagues. He loves the game. Despite his setbacks ‎& poor performances of late, I hope Jason continues to be successful. He has the motivation to overcome the adversity. Now that's he an Angel I hope things change for the better for him. He had a nice run when he was in Pittsburgh. In fact, in May his own book called Just My Game was released. It details his rocky road to success in the big leagues.

When I got back to the area behind home plate in section 116, I saw the King standing back there. I decided when the usher walked down to escort some people to their seats that I would attempt to give myself a royal upgrade from the standing room tickets we had. I was successful. I wound up going down five rows or so & I sat down. Quite amazingly, I had two seats to myself. It was rather crowded but luck was on my side. As a result, I got to see the game from a great vantage point.

As for the game we saw, the first batter of the game reached on three errors which set the tone for an odd day at the ballpark. The Brewers took an early 1-0 lead. The Pirates fought back to go ahead 2-1in the bottom of the third inning but they immediately gave it back as the Brewers went ahead, 4-2 with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Pirates got within a run at 4-3 in the sixth inning but they blew a golden opportunity to get more. As a result, they couldn't overcome the deficit as the Brewers scored four runs in the eighth inning & one more in the ninth inning to win going away, 9-3. Matt Garza of the Brewers got a quality start as he allowed three runs in six innings of work to earn the victory despite walking five in the process. By doing so, I wasn't able to see Jason Grilli pitch that day. Regardless I still had a good time. PNC Park is one of the best modern ballparks. With that being said, if you haven't been there yet, you should make some time to get there so you can see for yourself.

Stay tuned as I plan to write some more special posts that will recap this adventurous weekend.

Thank you for reading ‎& following along.

Gary Herman

Royalty starts June by seeing three different teams play at Yankee Stadium in consecutive days!‏

Thanks to a rain out on April 30th, the Yankees wound up hosting three different teams in consecutive days at Yankee Stadium. They were scheduled to play Sunday, June 1st against the Twins & Tuesday June 3rd against the Athletics. Since Monday  June 2nd was scheduled as an open date for both the Yankees & Mariners they decided to make the game that night. As a result, it set up a rare occurrence.

View from Section 420B
With that being said, here's how it played out.

On Sunday afternoon, I arranged to get my pal & fellow road tripper Blair Long a ticket for the game in the row right in front of the King & I in section 420B. Since there were a few empty seats by us he got to sit with us for the duration of the afternoon. It worked well. That way we were able to enjoy the game together. It was nice to see him again.
As for the game we saw, former Yankee Phil Hughes pitched eight strong innings just allowing two runs. ‎The Twins trailed, 2-1 after eight innings. In the ninth inning, Josh Willingham lead off with a solo homer which tied the game & got Phil Hughes off the hook for the hard luck loss. The Twins wound up batting around as Josh Willingham flew out to center field to end the inning. In between the Twins added five more runs as they made a winner out of Phil Hughes who got the last laugh on this day as his new team, the Twins beat the Yankees, 7-2.

‎Monday night marked the return to the Bronx again for Robinson Cano. He & his new team, the Seattle Mariners came back to the Bronx to play the make up game. Not only did the Yankees see their former teammate but they wound up facing Felix Hernandez who's one of the best pitchers in baseball.

As for the game we saw, the Mariners lead off hitter James Jones played college baseball at LIU in Brooklyn. My pal David Sack has seen him play there. It was a homecoming for him. He had a rough night though. He went hit less in five at bats which included a sacrifice bunt which was part of the decisive four run seventh inning which gave the Mariners' the lead for good. Robinson Cano once again heard the boos as he walked a few times, got picked off first base & he singled in his last at bat ‎to finish the game one for three. Felix Hernandez  pitched well. He gave up two runs in seven innings to earn the victory as the Mariners broke open a 2-2 tie as they went on to whip the Yankees, 10-2.

Tuesday night after work I returned to the Bronx hoping to make it three days in a row seeing three different teams play. Mother nature did her best to put a damper on that but thankfully she cooperated after an hour & twelve minute ‎delay. With that being said, first pitch wound up being at 8:17PM. As they say, better late than never.

As for the game we saw, the starting pitchers pitched well. Scott Kazmir, a former Met, went six & a third innings. He allowed two runs while he striking out ten. Hiroki Kuroda who started for the Yankees gave up just one run in six & two thirds innings. The Athletics tied the game at two in the top of the eighth inning so neither starter got a decision. The game went into extra innings. The Yankees bullpen sprung a leak as Adam Warren got tagged for three runs in the top of the tenth inning which proved costly as the Yankees fell again, 5-2.

Wednesday night when I got to Yankee Stadium I went to get my 25 game MLB Pass-Port book stamped at the Guest services booth by gate 6. While I was doing so, I saw a familiar face. It was my buddy Steve Cirvello who works as a business partner with my pal Rick Morris of the FDH Lounge. Steve told me he bought a bleacher ticket off of Stub Hub. I told him to come upstairs with me instead. It worked out well as there were some empty seats near the King & I. As a result, we got to enjoy each others company for the rest of the night. Steve can be found on Twitter. His handle is @FDHNYB. Please feel free to follow him & show him some royal love.

As for the game we saw, the Athletics overcame a 4-0 deficit as they went on to cruise past the Yankees again, 7-4.

Stay tuned for some special posts that will go into detail about our weekend getaway to Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Reading & Baltimore.

Thank you for reading & following along.

The King attends his 7,500th professional baseball game at Yankee Stadium!‏

On Friday night May 30th, the King aka Michael Casiano added another personal milestone to his resume. That night he saw his 7,500th professional baseball game in his lifetime. The Yankees played the Twins that night in the Bronx. Ironically his first baseball game was also at Yankee Stadium but that was the Old Stadium on May 26, 1963. He saw his first Met game on May 30th which was Memorial Day that year. His father took him then. It was bittersweet because the Yankees are the team he hates the most. He's been a Met fan since day one.

King's 7,500th Professional Baseball Game
As for the game we saw, the Twins used the long ball thanks to right fielder Oswaldo Arcia ‎ who hit a solo home run to give them an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Yankees answered back with a run scoring double by Jacoby Ellsbury to tie the game at one in the bottom of the third inning. The Twins responded with three more in the top of the fourth inning as left fielder Josh Willingham gave the Twins the lead for good with a lead off homer to make it a 2-1 game. Oswaldo Arcia hit a single & third baseman Trevor Plouffe belted a two run homer to give the Twins a 4-1 lead. They tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth inning as they went on to beat the Yankees, 6-1. As a result, the King got to celebrate his special occasion the way he wanted to.

After the game, we went to Donovan's Pub in Queens to celebrate in style. Our pal Bryan Gilligan drove us there. We wound up meeting up with the King's brother Charlie Casiano & our good friend Frank Anichiarico aka Duck. It turned out to be a memorable night indeed.

Stay tuned for a special post that will highlight the first week of June at Yankee Stadium.

Royalty enjoyed reunion week at Citi Field as the Dodgers & Diamondbacks came to play in May!‏

The King & I went to Sydney, Australia in March to see the baseball season officially open. We saw the Los Angeles Dodgers play the Arizona Diamondbacks there. With that being said, during the week of May 19th the same two teams came to Queens to play the Mets right in our backyard at Citi Field. So I decided to call it reunion week for us. First the Dodgers played the Mets for three games then the Diamondbacks did the same over Memorial Day weekend.

Here's how the games played out:

Mets welcome Dodgers to Citi Field
Tuesday night the Mets & Dodgers played a nine inning marathon time wise. The game lasted four hours ‎& eight minutes. The Dodgers beat the Mets, 9-4. Josh Beckett, a notorious slow worker started that night & he gave up four runs in five innings. He got plenty of support from his teammates so he was able to earn the W despite his subpar performance.

Wednesday night the Dodgers made it two in a row as they got by the Mets by a score of 4-3. This time it only took three hours ‎& one minute as starter Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched six innings allowing two runs to pick up the victory. As for the Mets, rookie Eric Campbell hit his first major league home run.

Thursday night the Mets wound up salvaging a game as they knocked off the Dodgers 5-3 to avoid being swept. They got a strong start from Jonathon Niese who went seven innings to get the win.

Mets welcome Diamondbacks to Queens
Friday night the Mets welcomed the Diamondbacks to Queens. They got off to a horrible start this season but they were playing better as they came to ‎play this three game series. Unfortunately mother nature didn't cooperate for us that night. They did play three & a half innings before they called the game off after waiting for a few hours. Luckily for the Mets they did. They were trailing 2-0 before the rain came. As a result, they decided to reschedule the game as part of a single admission straight doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

Royal Court lounging in Promenade Club before the game
Saturday afternoon they played what turned out to be the first game of the series. It was David Wright canvas print day. It wound up being an exciting day at the ballpark because we had some special ‎guests on hand. First & foremost, my Cousin Andy met me outside by the Apple. I had bought him a ticket so he could join us. When we got upstairs to the Promenade Club, we got to see our pal Eddie Bultman who we met up with in Sydney to open the season. He came to visit us again. He was wearing his MLB Opening Series t-shirt that he bought when we were Down Under. It was great to see him again. We also had some of the regulars we know in there which made for a festive scene. As game time was approaching, we proceeded to go upstairs to the Royal Court in section 515. Shortly thereafter, we were joined by the King's father Miguel & his brother Charlie who came to the game too. As always it was nice to see them again.

As for the game we saw, the Diamondbacks held off the Mets, 3-2. After the game, we all went to Donovan's Pub for dinner. Unfortunately Eddie couldn't come because he was going to Philadelphia that night to meet up with some friends of his.

‎Sunday afternoon we got to see the rare single admission twinbill. In game one, the Diamondbacks got a quality start from their starter Bronson Arroyo who allowed one run in six innings but he left the game with the score tied at one so he didn't get a decision for his efforts. The Diamondbacks capitalized on an error by the Mets in the ninth inning as Daniel Murphy dropped a pop up which allowed the eventual winning run to score as they went on to defeat the Mets, 2-1.

In game two, the Mets once again avoided being swept by the visiting team as they managed to get by the Diamondbacks, 4-2 to escape without further embarrassment.

Epic View of Celebration
It should be noted while the King ‎& I were watching the Mets play, our pal Eddie Bultman was at Citizens Bank Park that afternoon witnessing history. He got to see Josh Beckett of the Dodgers throw a no hitter against the Phillies. Quite amazingly, that game only took two hours & thirty seven minutes to play. We were both happy for him.

It's official, Josh Beckett no hits the Phillies
Stay tuned for some special posts I plan to do when time allows that will recap the highlights of my baseball season in June.

Thank you for reading & following along.
