Royalty is going to Chicago, Minneapolis & Milwaukee over Labor Day weekend!

Here's the game plan:

The King, David Rothenberg aka Swag Man & I are flying to Chicago O'Hare Airport on American Airlines. We leave New York LaGuardia Airport on Friday, September 1st at 7:30AM Eastern Time, we arrive in Chicagoland at 9:09AM Central Time if we're not delayed for any reason. Upon arrival, I'm renting a car from Budget Rent A Car for the weekend. We'll be staying in Chicago for the day. We fly back home Sunday night. Our flight departs Chicago O'Hare Airport at 8:30PM Central Time. We're scheduled to land at 11:36PM Eastern Time at LaGuardia Airport if all goes well.

Royalty goes to Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore for annual visit!

Toyota Corolla
On Thursday morning, August 3rd, I took public transportation to go out to New Hyde Park which is just into Nassau County on Long Island. That's where the local Avis location is that I like to rent from when I get a great deal. I wound up getting a Toyota Corolla for five days. After I got the car, I proceeded to go back home to pick up my bags so I could finally hit the road again. After doing so, I met up with my pal who we affectionately call the King. He was visiting his mother before he went away for the day. After I picked him up, I drove to Staten Island so I could pick up fellow Stampeder & friend of mine, Paul Sanders. Quite amazingly, he finally got to meet the King for the very first time. I arrived at his house at 1:15PM. He got in & we proceeded to drive down to Baltimore, Maryland. We arrived in the neighborhood of Canton-Fells Point at 4:45PM. We wound up having dinner at Looney's Pub which has been a royal tradition thanks to our friend, Peter Agnew who lives a few blocks away from there. We all enjoyed our pre game meal before we headed over to Oriole Park at Camden Yards which as far as I'm concerned is the best of the modern retro ballparks. As for me, I had their grilled stuffed salmon which came with broccoli & I was able to substitute red skin bliss potatoes for the salad which is what it normally comes with it as you can see. It was delicious. After we finished eating, I drove us all there. I want to personally thank Peter for getting us the tickets & a parking pass which came in handy. As I like to say, teamwork makes the dream work.

Since Oriole Park at Camden Yards opened up in 1992, I've been fortunate to say I've seen at least one Oriole game there every year. It's been a difficult task the last few years for me to maintain that distinction. This season was no different. After exhausting all my options, I decided that August 3rd would be my best chance to extend the streak & keep my annual tradition in tact. The only thing that could prevent me from doing so was mother nature. She tried her very best to put a damper on my plan. Thankfully despite a few rain delays combining for an hour & 42 minutes worth of wasted time, the Orioles were able to get their game against the Detroit Tigers in. The Orioles fell behind 7-0 early. They fought back but their comeback came up short as the game ended just past midnight. Not what I had I mind with a long drive awaiting me. After the game, the King took a Greyhound bus back home & I wound up driving our friend Peter home. Thankfully he only lives a few miles from the ballpark. By the time I got back by the ballpark it was 12:50AM. Paul & I continued on our way towards Dayton, Ohio where we planned to be Friday night.
View from Section 340 row 22 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards
We wound up driving to Belpre, Ohio which is 320 miles from Baltimore & a short distance from Parkersburg, West Virginia. Paul's brother, Greg lives there. He was kind enough to let Paul & I stay at his house. I was originally planning to arrive there around 4AM. Due to mother nature, we finally pulled onto his driveway at 6:30AM. He was outside waiting for us. I was totally exhausted. We wound up getting some sleep before continuing our the journey to Dayton.

Stay tuned for another special post that will go into further detail on how that day unfolded.

Thank you for reading & following along.

Gary Herman

Royalty is hitting the road again to Baltimore, Dayton, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Reading & Washington DC over the first weekend in August!

Here's the game plan:

I'm renting a car from Avis Rent A Car on Thursday August 3rd for five days to start the month of August off in royal fashion.

STAMPeders Meet & Greet Autographs
I'll be driving down to Baltimore, Maryland, Dayton & Cincinnati, Ohio, Pittsburgh & Reading, Pennsylvania & Washington DC to see some Major League & Minor League Baseball games before returning to NYC early Tuesday morning. The centerpiece of this journey will be in Dayton & Cincinnati. Thanks to a gentleman named Tim Parks, the creator & founder of these Baseball Passports, I'm privileged & honored to take part in a large gathering with other people I know & others who I'll finally get to meet & greet in person. This unique get together is referred to as a Stampede. It's where those of us who attend a baseball game prefer to leave our marks in the form of a stamp that validates that we were physically in a ballpark on a particular day when a baseball game was played. I look forward to sharing stories & teaching others how I've done my best to perfect the stamping process. As a result, I've been given the nickname "Stamp Champ". Every stamp has a story, good, bad or indifferent. All our stamps are unique to our own experiences. We all play by our own rules so regardless of what others may think, in our eyes it's done right. The memories we make can be shared with others as time goes on. Being a person who loves to document my whereabouts, I feel this a perfect way to remember all the great times I've had by going to a ballpark. You never know when you're going to see history made. I feel people who have families & young children benefit the most. These different Passport books create a bond for these people to share memories that they can pass on from generation to generation. The same can be said for friends. Anytime you spend at a ballpark always beats a great day at work.

Thursday August 3rd Tigers at Orioles 7:05PM

Royalty sees U2 The Joshua Tree Tour 2017 at MetLife Stadium!

MetLife Stadium
Last night I got to witness one of my favorite Rock bands, U2, perform live in concert at MetLife Stadium. Let it be known it wasn't the first time I've seen them live. It was my third time, a real charm too. In fact, the very first time I saw them was back on September 14, 1987 at old Giants Stadium when the first did their original Joshua Tree Tour. This was the 30th Anniversary of that legendary album. Where has the time gone. One thing hasn't changed for me during that time frame though, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. For that matter, I'm still searching for Where the Streets Have No Name. However, I'm still in God's Country. In between these tours almost 30 years apart, I did see them do their 360 Tour back on September 24, 2009 which also took place at Giants Stadium. That show was Magnificent.

The Joshua Tree Tour 2017
As for last night's performance, they started the show with one of their many classics from the early days in 1983, Sunday Bloody Sunday. They followed that with another one, New Year's Day. They went on with a version of Bad from 1984 which included a snippet of America by Simon & Garfunkel. After that, they sung Pride (In The Name of Love).

U2 Doing Sunday Bloody Sunday
After Bono told the massive crowd how they first played the Ritz in NYC in front of 25 people then he changed it to 75, they continued the show by honoring their 30th Anniversary of their earth shattering Joshua Tree album that ultimately put them on the commercial map by playing all the tracks & cassettes which detailed American culture. It was like a trip down memory lane for the U2 faithful & a tribute to our great country.

After a brief break, they came back out for more which included later hits, Beautiful Day or Beautiful Night which Bono sang which indeed it was. When I bought my ticket back in January, I was hoping mother nature would cooperate for me. Did she ever. They continued to arouse the crowd with Elevation & Vertigo. Before the show ended we all came together as "One." It was a touching moment to say the least. They proceeded to close the show with their newest song from their latest LP Songs of Experience, The Little Things That Give You Away.

As you can see, I was thoroughly entertained for just over two hours. If you like U2, I highly recommend you go see them live.

Thank you for reading & following along.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

Royal Review of SunTrust Park in Atlanta & the Surrounding Area!

On June 8th, the King & I officially rejoined Club 122 if you will. We saw a baseball game at the Atlanta Braves new ballpark called SunTrust Park which is located in Marietta, a northern suburb in Cobb County. It's a 25 mile drive from the Atlanta Hartsfield Airport which is 10 miles south of downtown Atlanta where their old home, Turner Field was located. For whatever reason, the Braves decided not to renew their lease. With that being said, they decided to move out to the suburbs. Like anything else in life, some people like the move & others hate it. As a visitor, I'm indifferent. I loved Turner Field but now I have a new place to go if & when I'm in Atlanta again. In that regard, it works for me. If I lived & worked in downtown Atlanta, I wouldn't be too happy.

As for SunTrust Park, the location is the biggest problem. If you don't drive, it's definitely going to be a nightmare. You can resort to taking public transportation but it will be a very time consuming proposition. As an alternative, I suggest that you take it as far as you can then arrange to get an Uber to take you the rest of the way. As for the King & I, I rented a car while we were there. However since we stayed at the Ramada Inn which was about 3 or 4 miles away, we decided to see how the public transportation was from there. We wound up walking almost a mile down Delk Road to get a bus on Bentley Road. After a short wait we got on the #10 bus which took us right to the ballpark. We each paid $2.50 to get on. After the the game, we decided to go to Steak N Shake which was a short walk from the ballpark. After we ate, we proceeded to walk another mile or so to Aker Mill Road off Cobb Parkway where we eventually picked up the #50 bus which would have took us right to our hotel but for some reason, I decided to get off the bus early. It turned out not to be a total loss. As a result, I noticed a restaurant called the Delkwood Grill & Bar which was on the way back to the hotel. It wound up being beneficial because we ended up going there for a post game meal after the day night doubleheader Saturday night. It was a great alternative to staying in the Battery which is the entertainment district at the ballpark. It's still under construction. They have a number of bars & restaurants there with many more coming in the near future.

Friday night I drove up to the ballpark, we wound up paying $15 to park & we still had to walk a mile or so to get to the game. Along the way, I saw a check cashing place which seemed odd because I personally thought the surrounding area look more on the upscale side. Mind you most ballparks & other sports venues are usually located in the less attractive parts of a city or suburbs. For the most part, SunTrust Park is surrounded by many different places including a variety of hotels, chain restaurants, gas stations as well the Battery itself. In other words, assuming you drive you have numerous options to choose from there. As for parking, I strongly suggest that you get a prepaid parking pass. That's what we did on Saturday & Sunday thanks to our pal Bryan Gilligan who joined us for the weekend. He got us a parking pass in lot 29 which is a tailgate lot. They have other lots as well as parking garages. For our needs, this lot worked out really well. Our other friends Michelle Ronis & Jeremy Bank wound up staying at a Courtyard by Marriott that was walking distance to the ballpark. Even though they rented a car they left it at the hotel.

As for the ballpark itself, I want to thank fellow Ballpark Chaser & Stampeder, Robert O'Neil who lives within walking distance of the ballpark. He has season tickets for the Braves. He has a pair of seats in section 324 row 7 which is just to the right of home plate. The King & I wound up buying these seats from him for our first game there when the Braves played the Phillies. It worked out really well for us. The usher there named Katherine was very friendly & she enjoyed our company. I went over to guest services & I told them what a great job she did. I'm not one to praise people who work at a ballpark quickly. She was a real sweetheart. If you go there, please stop by & tell her I said hello from New York. In addition, Robert also has a pair of seats in the Chophouse which is the party area in right field. As a season ticket holder, Robert has set up a Facebook group to help other people get tickets to see SunTrust Park. He was able to get my friends & I tickets for the rest of the weekend. We requested seats in section 426 & he was able to accommodate us. We were all grateful for his kindness. As I like to say, teamwork makes the dream work.

King, me & Robert O'Neil
On Sunday, I got to meet & greet some new people I talk to online from time to time. I'm referring to Jay Carlton who goes by Carlton Jay on Facebook. He drove over from his home which is 32 miles southeast of Nashville, Tennessee along with his lovely wife Anna & their adorable daughter, Jordin. It was so nice to meet these wonderful people.
Jay Carlton & I

In addition, I got to see another young lady named Karrie Weddle who I met at Yankee Stadium last September. She had run a 5K race that Sunday morning she said & they gave her a ticket for the game. It was her first one there. She also lives a few miles from the ballpark. It was so nice to catch up with her again.
Karrie Weddle & I
As for the games we saw, the Braves won the first two & the Mets won the last three so it turned out to be a very fun time at the new home of the Braves. I plan to return again in September to see the Mets again as well as the Georgia Bulldogs & the Falcons in their new downtown home, Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Thank you for reading & following along.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

Royalty is going to Dallas & Atlanta in June to see the Mets play!

Here's the game plan:

The King & I are flying to Dallas, Texas on Southwest Airlines. We leave New York LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday, June 7th at 10:30AM Eastern Time We're supposed to land at Love Field in Big D at 1:35PM Central Time if we're on time. Upon arrival, I'm renting a car from E-Z Rent A Car for the day. I plan to meet some special people while we're there. That includes my friend Angelia Christian who arranged to get all of us tickets for the Ranger game that night. Last time I came to visit, we went to see the Mavericks & Cowboys play together. That's what I call Texas sized royal treatment. In addition, Margaret Felton who I met that last time as well will be joining us. So will a lady who can't wait to meet me. Her name is Ramona Almand. I know her thanks to the MLB Passport group aka the Stampeders if you will. We proudly belong to that group on Facebook. Furthermore, another member of that amazing group who I met last year when he visited NYC will be coming to Dallas from Las Vegas to see the Mets who are also his favorite team play. His name is Michael Mevorah.  I look forward to seeing him again as well.

After the Lone Star visit, the King & I board another Southwest flight, Thursday morning to Atlanta, Georgia where we'll spend the rest of the weekend. We depart Love Field at 8:10AM Central Time. If all goes well, we're expected to arrive at Hartsfield Airport at 11:30AM Eastern Time. Upon arrival, I'm renting a car from Alamo so we can get around the area while we're there. The main goal is to go to see their new ballpark, SunTrust Park which is located 23 miles from the airport in Cobb County which is way out in the North suburbs. By doing so, we'll regain membership back into the exclusive current Club 122 that we belong to. In addition, the Mets are there so this was the perfect time for us to go. We will have friends of ours who are meeting us out there. They being Michelle Ronis & Jeremy Banks who live out on Long Island. They arrive on Friday. In addition, our pal Bryan Gilligan is joining us on Saturday morning in time for the first day night doubleheader that they're playing there since they got rained out on May 4th. We're going to pick him up at the airport at 9AM when arrives. As a result, we all get to see an extra baseball game thanks to mother nature. We're so used to losing them when it rains. Furthermore, I want to give props to fellow ballpark chaser Robert O'Neil who I plan to meet there. He went out of his way to accommodate our needs & wants regarding tickets for the games. He has season tickets & he was kind enough to work some magic to secure additional tickets for us. Moreover, I plan to meet another gentleman from our Stampeder Facebook group. His name is Carlton Jay. He lives 32 miles southeast of Nashville, Tennessee. He's coming to the game with his wife & their young daughter on Sunday. He can't wait to meet me he told me. Mind you I feel the same way. Nothing is better than meeting other good people in living color not just writing & chatting online. He's never been to NYC. I hope someday I can find a way to change that for him.

Sunday night the party comes to an end when we leave Atlanta on a Southwest flight that departs at 8:40PM Eastern Time. If all goes according to plan, we're scheduled to land at 11PM Eastern Time at LaGuardia Airport.

Wednesday June 7th Mets at Rangers 7:05PM Central Time

Thursday June 8th Phillies at Braves 7:35PM Eastern Time

Friday June 9th Mets at Braves 7:35PM Eastern Time

Saturday June 10th Mets at Braves 1PM & 6PM Day Night Doubleheader Eastern Time

Sunday June 11th Mets at Braves 1:35PM Eastern Time

A Royal Farewell to John Andariese, NYC Basketball Legend!

Last night we lost a legend in the basketball world. My friend Rich Wolber aka Staten Island Rich sent me a text message informing me that former Fordham basketball player & long time NY Knick broadcaster on TV & radio John Andariese aka Johnny Hoops had passed away. It didn't surprise me.

I personally had the privilege & pleasure of meeting John countless number of times over the last 25 plus years. I used to see him after Knick games in the lobby going back to the late 1980's. He was always friendly to me. In fact, when the King & I returned from our dream trip as he called it back in early February 1992, John saw us & said you should frame those ticket stubs.

Ticket Stubs from Dream Trip in 1992
Since then, I used to always try my best to see John before Knick games when he did the color commentary on the radio broadcast in the late 90's until he retired. He always made time to say hello to me & he always acknowledged my presence. He was usually busy preparing for the game but it didn't stop him from saying a quick hello. He always came prepared with his notebook which included newspaper articles & box scores from previous games. John was very detailed & he always did his homework.

In 2014, he was honored by the Basketball Hall of Fame when they named him the recipient of the Curt Gowdy Media Award. I remember the Knicks honoring him on Garden vision against the Dallas Mavericks on February 24, 2014.

John Andariese
Johnny Hoops
He retired from broadcasting in 2012. I honestly believe he was forced out. That started his demise. The last time I saw John was at a Fordham Ram basketball game on January, 22, 2015 when they celebrated the 90th Anniversary of the Rose Hill Gym. I remember seeing him in the bathroom. He looked dazed & confused. I knew right then & there his days were numbered. On my way to work, I read that he had dementia. It makes all the sense in the world. Sad to say, we lost a great man. John may you rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy goes out to your family. I'll never forgot the way you treated me over the years. Thank you for the memories.

Thank you for reading & following along.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman
