Prince gets interviewed by Kurt Smith, author of Ballpark E-Guides!

Since baseball ended in October, Kurt Smith, the author of Ballpark E-Guides had some time on his hands quite amazingly so did I.

With that being said, he got to catch up with me recently for an interview about all the sports travel I do.

Please click on the link below to read all about what I told him:

http://www.ballparkeguides.com/ballpark-e-guides-blog/my-interview-with-gary

I want to thank Kurt again for taking the time to write about me on his blog.

In preparation for the 2013 baseball season, I think you should consider looking into getting a Ballpark E-Guide which will help you cut your cost when you go out to the ballpark. Tell him, I referred you so he can give you a "royal" discount.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty sees Jets win in St. Louis!

Prince at Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis
After we spent the night at Knights Inn in the St. Louis area, the King and I drove to downtown St. Louis to see the Rams host the Jets at the Edward Jones Dome.

We got there early so we could park the car on the street within walking distance of the Dome. It worked out well as we were positioned to get to the airport when the game ended.

We walked over to the Dome and we looked for tickets outside. Surprisingly there were a good number of Jet fans heading into the building.

After looking for a while, we finally found someone who had a few extra tickets. We wound up giving him $30 for the pair.

We proceeded to walk in. We wound up sitting in section 441 with our pal, Ira Lieberfarb aka Ira from Staten Island who sees every Jet home and away game. It was great to see him again.

As for the game we saw, it started slow for the Jets as they fell behind 7-0 when wide receiver Brandon Gibson caught a one touchdown pass with 3:45 left in the first quarter to give the Rams' the early lead. With 44 seconds left in the quarter, the Jets' got on the scoreboard as their kicker Nick Folk kicked a 51 yard field goal to make the score 7-3.

In the second quarter, the Jets had a 26 yard field goal attempt blocked by cornerback Janoris Jenkins with 11:48 left. With 4:31 left until halftime, Mark Sanchez connected with Chaz Schilens on a 25 yard touchdown pass to give the Jets a 10-7 lead. They extended their lead to 13-7 with 57 seconds as Nick Folk booted his second 51 yard field goal of the game.

After playing a scoreless third quarter, the Jets padded their lead to 20-7 as running back Bilal Powell ran in from five yards out with 14:16 left in the fourth quarter. Powell scored another touchdown with 8:29 to go to make it 27-7 as he ran 11 yards this time to add to the lead. The Rams finished the scoring as Brandon Gibson caught another touchdown pass with 5:40 left in the game. This one was from two yards out. They failed to convert on a two point conversion so the score remained 27-13 Jets. That's the way it ended as we ended our getaway on a high note.

After the game, we drove to the airport. We returned the car rental to Hertz. 844 miles were safely driven. Then we caught our flight to Chicago before we landed in NYC at LaGuardia airport just before midnight.

With that being said, another memorable weekend getaway was in the books.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Gary Herman

Royalty meets up with fellow roadtripper, Chris Coats in Columbia, Missouri for Mizzou football!

The King & I with Superfan Chris Coats
Saturday after we left Cape Girardeau, we drove to Columbia, Missouri which is the home of the University of Missouri Tigers.

We parked the car on the street around 4PM. We proceeded to walk over to Faurot Field  at Memorial Stadium where the Tigers play football. We had plenty of time before the 6PM kickoff as the Tigers were hosting the Syracuse Orange.

We lucked out as a few people gave us free tickets to the game. We went inside and walked around since we had a lot of time to kill before the game started.

We were joined by Chris Coats aka Superfan. Chris not only roots for the Kansas City Royals but he's likes the Missouri Tigers because he lives in Missouri. He got out of work at 4PM and he drove an hour and a half to Columbia so he can join us for the Mizzou game. He had a ticket in section D row 58 that he bought for $20 from someone he knew.

The King and I decided to hang out by his seat. We found some room on an empty bench right behind him so we were able to watch the game together. It worked out beautifully.

As for the game we saw, the Missouri Tigers got off to a fast start. They lead 14-3 after the first quarter. They extended their lead to 17-3 almost midway through the second quarter. The Orange of Syracuse scored a touchdown with 3:05 left in the half to cut the Tigers' lead to 17-10 as running back Prince-Tyson Gulley ran in from a yard out.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Orange evened the score at 17 as wide receiver Alec Lemon caught a 13 yard touchdown pass 46 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Tigers came roaring back as they regained the lead, 24-17 as running back Kendial Lawrence ran in from three yards out with 7:07 left in the game. The Orange answered right back with 5:33 left as running back Jerome Smith ran in from eight yards out to tie the game again at 24. The Tigers went back ahead as their kicker Andrew Baggett booted a 46 yard field goal with 1:52 left to give the Tigers a 27-24 lead. After getting the ball back at their own 19 yard line, Syracuse went down the field and they stunned the crowd as they got the game winning touchdown with 20 seconds to go as wide receiver Alec Lemon caught a 17 yard pass for the winning score. They converted a first down on 4th and 10 along the way too. Quite amazingly, Lemon was wide open as he literally walked into the end zone untouched as the Orange tamed the Tigers, 31-27. As a result, the Orange are bowl bound.

It should be noted that Alec Lemon finished the game with 12 catches for 244 yards. What a performance.
After the game, Chris joined us for some post game festivities. We wound up going to Shakespeare's Pizza which is located in downtown Columbia. My former co-worker, Glenn Berk highly recommended it. It turned out to be as good as advertised.

We all shared a pepperoni pie that was made to order. It tasted really good. In addition, we had a great time catching up on our recent road trips.

I want to personally thank Chris for joining us. We thoroughly enjoyed his company.

Stay tuned for another special post as the trip continued on Sunday in St. Louis.

Thank you for reading and following.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

Royalty catches up with Eric Hasseltine, Memphis radio announcer at FedEx Forum in Memphis!

Eric Hasseltine and I
Back in December 2006 at Madison Square Garden, I met up with Eric Hasseltine who calls the Memphis Grizzlies games on radio. I had asked him if had a Grizzlie pocket schedule. He said in matter of fact I do. I told him about all the traveling I do. He seemed very interested.

Since that night, I've always looked for him whenever the Grizzlies came to play the Knicks and/or the Nets. He would always stop his busy work load to acknowledge my presence. With that being said, I knew he was a good guy.

I've seen him numerous times over the years but I never got to see him in Memphis. I was determined to do so.

I told him I wanted to get back to the FedEx Forum. I was planning to go there last year but then the NBA was locked out and the season started late so I didn't get to back up what I said.

When the NBA schedule came out in late July, I noticed the Grizzlies were home when I was planning to see the Jets play in St. Louis. Ironically the Knicks happened to be playing the Grizzlies the same weekend. Regardless my main goal was to see Eric Hasseltine.

When I entered the building, I searched around to find the broadcast booth where Eric would be calling the game from. Once I found it, I knew I had to sweet talk an usher to let me go to where he was. I tried asking a lady and he refused to let me go down without a ticket for her section. As usual, I didn't accept no for an answer. I went to the next section and I asked the guy who was on guard if I could go down to see the radio announcer. He thankfully said yes. I was so excited.

I waited patiently for a few minutes then Eric got my attention. He told me to wait a few minutes and he came back with a Grizzlies media guide for me. That was so nice of him. He seemed all stressed out. He told me they gave him an unexpected assignment. That what happens when the team is winning he said. He still spoke to me for a few minutes. It was great to see him again. I told him I hope to see him again on New Year's Eve in Indianapolis when the Grizzlies visit the Pacers. If not, I'll see him when they come to Brooklyn in late February and MSG in late March.

I'm so glad to see the Grizzlies are playing so well. Eric's been with the team since they moved to Memphis from Vancouver back in 2001. They've had their share of ups and downs. I'm glad they're in the midst of an up swing these days. I hope they continue to play well.

Eric also hosts his own sports radio show on ESPN radio 92.9 in Memphis M-F 2-4PM Central Time. If you want to listen to him, tune in.

He can be found on Twitter. His handle is @EricHasseltine.

I want to personally thank him for giving me some of his precious time while I was in Memphis.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

Royalty sees the Knicks play the Grizzlies in Memphis!

Me Outside the FedEX Forum
Friday morning the King and I flew to St. Louis for the weekend. Upon arrival, I rented a car from Hertz for the weekend. I didn't like the car they gave in the Hertz Gold stall so I told the young lady I needed a car with a trunk. She told me to take a Toyota Camry or a Chevy Cruze. I decided to go with the Camry which was a nice upgrade to the car they were going to give me.

Once we pulled out of the Hertz lot, I noticed a place to eat called the Golden Pancake Family restaurant. I was hungry so I went in to eat. The King wasn't hungry so he stayed in the car. I had some bacon, sausage, eggs and pancakes for breakfast. It was very good. It set the tone for another great weekend getaway.
After I ate, I got back in to the car and we drove towards Memphis, Tennessee. On the way there, we stopped off at Super 8 in Cape Girardeau and we were able to check in early. It worked out well. We were able to drop off our bags and we relaxed for a short time before we continued on to Memphis.

We finally arrived in Memphis shortly after 6PM local time. We parked the car on the street within walking distance from Beale Street which is where the FedEx Forum home of the Grizzlies is located.

This was our first game there since our only other visit back on November 12, 2004 when we saw the Grizzlies play the Golden State Warriors.

Before we went inside, we took a stroll up and down the legendary strip of restaurants and entertainment on Beale Street. We decided to go into a place called Pig on Beale for a pre game dinner. Their slogan is its pork with an attitude. I had a ribs sampler which consisted of ribs, pulled pork and a smoked chicken thigh. The King had some ribs. It turned out to be a good choice. Once we were done, we went inside the arena so we could refresh our memories about the FedEx Forum.

Before the game, I was able to catch up with my pal Eric Hasseltine, he's the radio announcer for the Grizzlies. Stay tuned for the special post I'm going to do about our latest get together.
As for the game we saw, the Grizzlies came in with a six game winning streak. For that matter so did the Knicks. With that being said, one streak was going to end.

After the first quarter, the Grizzlies took a 29-25 lead. At halftime, they continued to lead, 54-49. In the third quarter, the Grizzlies pulled away from the Knicks as they extended their lead to 18, 85-67 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Knicks cut the lead down but they weren't able to overcome the Grizzlies who went on to win their seventh straight game as the Knicks suffered their first loss of the young season.
Marc Gasol of the Grizzlies lead all scorers with 24 points but it was his teammate and former Knick Zach Randolph who was a force throughout the game. He scored 20 and he added 15 rebounds to carry the Grizzlies to the victory.

As for the Knicks, Carmelo Anthony paced them with 20 points in the losing effort after he had only nine the night before in San Antonio.

After the game, we drove back to Cape Girardeau, Missouri where we spent the night.

Stay tuned for the special post I'm going to be as our journey continued in Columbia, Missouri.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

View from Section 230 at Barclays Center
Monday morning I went to Avis to return the Lincoln Town car I rented for the weekend before I went to work. I drove 455 miles safely.

After work I came home to rest and recharge the batteries and I watched Monday Night Football as the Steelers squeaked past the lowly Chiefs, 16-13 in overtime.

Tuesday night after work I went to downtown Brooklyn to see the Nets take on the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Barclays Center. Before I went inside I went to the Atlantic Center Mall across the street to have dinner at McDonald's.

After I ate, I went into the Barclays Center. I wound up meeting up with the King and our pals Vincent Ascanio and Al Linderman who were there. We enjoyed each others company.

As for the game we saw, the Nets and the Cavaliers kept it close early. The Cavaliers lead, 30-29 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Nets turned it up a notch as they pulled away from the Cavaliers. The Nets lead, 64-42 at halftime. After the third quarter, the Cavaliers sliced the Nets lead down to ten, 85-75. In the fourth quarter, the Nets maintained their double digit lead as they went on to beat the Cavaliers, 114-101.

The big three of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson and Brook Lopez accounted for 74 points to pace the Nets to victory.

As for the Cavaliers, they got production from two players, Anderson Varejao who finished with 35 points and he grabbed 18 rebounds and Kyrie Irving, the second year guard, poured in 34 points and he handed out 8 assists in the losing effort.

Wednesday night I came after work and I relaxed. I needed to prepare for my big weekend getaway.
Thursday night after work I went back to the Barclays Center to see the Nets host the Boston Celtics. I stopped off at Subway for dinner in the Atlantic Center Mall first. I met up with the King and our friend Phil Butleman at the game.

As for the game we saw, the Celtics played without their star guard Rajon Rondo who got hurt the night before. The Nets took a 31-26 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, they extended their lead to nine at halftime, 59-50. In the third quarter, the Celtics outplayed the Nets badly as they went ahead after three, 79-74. In the fourth quarter, the Nets came back and they beat the Celtics, 102-97 much to the delight of the sold out crowd at the Barclays Center.

Once again the big three lead the way. This time Deron Williams scored 24 points and he dished out 8 assists. Brook Lopez had 24 points and Joe Johnson added 19 points and he pulled down 8 rebounds. In addition, Kris Humphries had 10 points and he ripped down 13 rebounds to help the cause.

As for the Celtics, they were led by Paul Pierce who scored 22 points while Kevin Garnett was limited to only 14 points in the losing performance.

Stay tuned as I'm going to do some special posts that will recap my latest getaway to Memphis, Columbia and St. Louis, Missouri over the weekend.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty goes to Philadelphia to see the Eagles play the Cowboys!

Prince at Lincoln Financial Field
After we left Lancaster Sunday, we drove on Route 30 towards Philadelphia.

The highlight of the ride was that we got to see a number of Amish people who were riding in their horse and buggys. It was such a unique experience to see them riding along the road.

We got to Philadelphia in the early afternoon so we had plenty of time to get ready for some football which was scheduled to start at 4:25PM. We went to Lincoln Financial Field to see the Philadelphia Eagles play their division rival, the Dallas Cowboys with our friend, Frankie Centola.

In addition, we had our pals, Steve Fekete aka the Padre Punk and Paul Derrick aka the Sporting Puma there with us in spirit. They're both big Cowboy fans.

As for the game we saw, the Eagles took the opening kickoff and they marched down the field on an 81 yard ten play drive that culminated with a 2 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Riley Cooper from quarterback Michael Vick which gave the Eagles the early 7-0 lead. The Cowboys responded on their first drive of the game as they answered with a touchdown to tie the game as running back Felix Jones caught an 11 yard pass with 2:13 left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the offense disappeared. The Cowboys managed to get a 30 yard field goal from kicker Dan Bailey with 3:50 left in the half to give the Cowboys a 10-7 lead.

In the third quarter, the Eagles regained the lead on a 44 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jeremy Macklin from backup rookie quarterback Nick Foles who replaced Michael Vick who suffered a concussion with 12:52 left to give the Eagles a 14-10 lead. With 4:32 left, Alex Henery extended the Eagles' lead to 17-10 as he kicked a 40 yard field goal. The Cowboys' closed out the quarter with a 30 yard touchdown pass to Dez Bryant from Tony Romo that tied the game at 17 as time expired in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Dwayne Harris of the Cowboys ran back a punt 78 yards for a touchdown to give the Cowboys a 24-17 lead with 13:35 left. With 12:25 left to go, Brandon Carr of the Cowboys intercepted a pass and he ran it back 47 yards to add to the Cowboys' lead which was now 31-17. The Eagles' got a touchdown run from a yard out from running back Stanley Havili with 1:55 left to pull the Eagles within 8 at 31-23 as Alex Henery missed the point after wide left. The Cowboys got the final say as defensive tackle Jason Hatcher recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown with 46 seconds left to give the Cowboys' a 38-23 much needed victory. With the loss, the Eagles' season is in serious jeopardy.

After the game, we drove Frankie home then we went home.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Yours truly,

Royalty goes to see AHL hockey in Hershey, PA!

Prince at Giant Center
After spending Saturday afternoon in Villanova, the King and I passed through Lancaster, Pennsylvania which is known as for its Amish population. More importantly, my parents live there.

We did stop off at McDonald's for a fast dinner in Lancaster on Route 30 before we continued on to Hershey, Pennsylvania which is called the sweetest place on earth. It's a great place for tourists to visit. They have different attractions such Chocolate World where chocolate is made. In addition, there's HersheyPark, which is an amusement park for people of all ages.

Since we decided to avoid the toll roads, we got to experience the local flavor of the Eastern part of the Keystone state by driving through different country areas which is quite a contrast from the city life we usually deal with day in and day out. A change of scenery is always a welcomed sight. That's why we love to go away.

After dealing with some local traffic along the way, we arrived at the Giant Center, which is the home of the Hershey Bears, the minor league affiliate of the Washington Capitals in the American Hockey League at 6:45PM. We parked the car in the parking lot and we walked over to the arena. Shortly thereafter we rounded up tickets then we went inside to see some hockey.

The Hershey Bears were playing the St. John's IceCaps who are the Winnipeg Jets' farm club. It should be noted that the Bears are celebrating their 75th Anniversary this season.

As for the game we saw, after a scoreless first period, the IceCaps finally broke through 5:19 into the second period as right winger Eric O'Dell lit the lamp to give the IceCaps a 1-0 lead. The Bears got the equalizer late in the period as left winger Barry Almeida scored with 1:14 left in the period to tie the game at a goal a piece.

In the third period, the IceCaps took advantage of a four minute power play as they scored the go ahead and eventual game winner with 13:04 left in the game as defenseman Derek Meech buried the puck in the net which gave the visiting IceCaps a 2-1 victory.

After the game, we drove back to Lancaster where we stayed over with my parents. We stayed up a few hours talking and catching up with them. I want to personally thank them for putting us up for the night.
Sunday morning after getting a good night sleep, we enjoyed a nice home cooked breakfast.

After we ate, we made our way back towards home. On the way back, we made a pit stop in Philadelphia for some football before we came home.

Stay tuned for the special post that will go into detail regarding the way we spent the rest of our Sunday.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty goes to Villanova to see football!

Prince at Villanova Stadium
Saturday morning I woke up early so I could go to Avis to rent a car again for the weekend. This time I wound up getting a Lincoln Town car. It was that or an SUV. Since I needed a trunk, I took the luxury car. It was nice to go in style again.

I went back home and I picked up the King and away we went.

This time we took a ride to Villanova, Pennsylvania. The only other time we went there was back in March when we went to the Pavilion which is the campus home of the Villanova Wildcats basketball team who play a handful of games there.

Next door is Villanova Stadium, home of the Wildcats' football team. Saturday afternoon the Wildcats were hosting the James Madison Dukes.

The King and I drove past the Stadium and we found a parking spot on the street in the neighborhood that was nearby.

After taking a short walk over to the stadium, we waited outside for a little while. It was worth the wait as a few people gave us tickets for the game. Once we got them, we went inside. It was a small intimate venue which consisted of benches. We decided to go up to the top in front of the press box by the 50 yard line so we could have a good overview of the action.

As for the game we saw, the Wildcats came out roaring. They scored early and often as they got a 4 yard touchdown run from their quarterback John Robertson who found the end zone with 8:19 left in the first quarter to give his team a 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter, they extended their lead to 10-0 as kicker Mark Hamilton booted a 22 yard field goal with 12:22 left until halftime. They made it 17-0 as wide receiver Dorian Wells caught a 20 yard touchdown pass from quarterback John Robertson with 5:18 left in the second quarter. It stayed that way as they went into the locker room.

In the third quarter, the Dukes finally got on the scoreboard as their quarterback Justin Thorpe ran in from a yard out to cut the lead to 17-7 with 12:47 left. The Wildcats responded as John Robertson answered with a one yard touchdown run of his own to give the Wildcats a 24-7 lead with 10:08 to go in the quarter. With 6 minutes to go, safety Matt McCann sacked Justin Thorpe in the end zone for a safety to make it 26-7. Before the quarter ended, the Wildcats found the end zone again. This time running back Kevin Monangai scored from a yard out to give the Wildcats a 33-7 lead with 1:22 to go in the quarter. It should be noted that he surpassed a thousand yards rushing for the season during this game.

In the fourth quarter, the Dukes finally woke up as Justin Thorpe threw two touchdown passes in a four minute span to pull them within a few scores at 33-20 with 8:39 left. The natives were starting to get nervous around us. But with 5:33 to go in the game, Wildcats' linebacker Joey Harmon sacked Justin Thorpe in the end zone for another safety as the Wildcats sealed the deal, 35-20.

After the game, we continued our journey through the Keystone State as we headed to Hershey to see some hockey.

Stay tuned for the special post that will go into detail about that.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

Prince in Section 230 at Barclays Center
Monday morning I woke up early so I could return the Crown Victoria I rented from Avis for the weekend. I wound up driving 1,134 miles safely over the two days I had the car.

I went to work afterwards tired and all. I survived the day and after work I took the subway to downtown Brooklyn where the new Barclays Center is located. It's the home of the Brooklyn Nets who moved from New Jersey. On this night, the Nets were hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves. It should be noted that they were missing two of their key players, Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio who were inactive due to injuries.

Even though I saw the Barclays Center during the preseason, this was my first official visit if you will. It was my 58th NBA arena which includes all the current ones.

Before I went inside I stopped off a Subway restaurant for my pre game dinner. It was conveniently located in the Atlantic Center Mall which is right across the street from the arena. When I finished I proceeded to go into the building to see some NBA basketball.

When I got to my seat in section 230, I met up with the King and our pal Vincent Ascanio who was also there.

As for the game we saw, it started well for the new team in town. The Nets got off to a fast start as they lead by four, 31-27 after the first quarter. They extended their lead to 15 at halftime, 62-47. They lead by as much as 22 along the way. After three quarters, they lead, 86-75. In the fourth quarter, the Timberwolves finally awoke. Did they ever, they stormed back and they blew past the Nets as they dominated down the stretch making one shot after another. The Timberwolves outscored the Nets, 32-10 over the last twelve minutes to come away with an improbable 107-96 victory.

The Timberwolves rallied without their two star players. They got a game high 21 points from center Nikola Pekovic. In addition, forward Chase Budinger came off the bench and he added 16 many of which came during their late surge as they stunned the Nets. In the losing effort, Deron Williams had 18 points to go along with 13 assists.

Tuesday night after work I went out for dinner with my Aunt Joan and Uncle Mort who were in Manhattan for the day. We went to Ben's Deli. We had some good food and we got to catch up at the same time. It was really nice to see them again. I want to personally thank them for meeting me.

Wednesday night after work I went home to relax as it was snowing believe it or not. If Hurricane Sandy didn't do enough damage, we got a Noreaster on top of it which produced some wet and slushy snow.
Thursday night after work the snow disappeared thanks to some warmer weather. As a result, I was able to do my laundry when I got home.

Friday night after work I went to Charley's Subs for dinner in Penn Station. When I was done, I went upstairs to Madison Square Garden. I saw the undefeated Knicks take on the visiting Dallas Mavericks who were playing without their superstars Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion.

As for the game I saw at the Transformed Garden, the Knicks and Mavericks battled it out. The Knicks lead by two after the first quarter, 25-23. In the second quarter, the Mavericks went ahead as they lead at halftime, 57-55. In the third quarter, the Knicks started to take over the game as they took the lead at 84-78 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Knicks maintained their lead as they beat the Mavericks, 104-94 to stay unbeaten at 4-0 on the young season. Once again, Carmelo Anthony led the way for the Knicks as he scored a game high 31 points while teammate J.R. Smith added 22. For the Mavericks, O.J. Mayo paced them with 23 points.

Stay tuned for some special posts that I'm going to do that will recap my latest getaway weekend from NYC.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

Royalty goes to Cleveland to see the Browns play the Ravens!

Prince at Cleveland Browns Stadium
After we spent the night in Somerset, PA at Days Inn, we got up in the morning and we had breakfast at the hotel before we continued our journey to Cleveland, Ohio.

We left the hotel at 9:15AM and we arrived in downtown Cleveland at 12:20PM. We parked the car on the street and we walked over to Cleveland Browns Stadium where we were going to see the Browns play the Baltimore Ravens.

We didn't have tickets yet. We went outside the southeast gate and we asked around for them. After a short time, we were able to round up a few singles. The first one cost us $20 and the second was $10 so we split the difference and we went inside to watch the game.

As for the game we saw, the Browns reminded us of the Washington Wizards from the night before. Ironically they fell behind big early as the Ravens raced out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. Running back Ray Rice from Rutgers was running wild early. He scored the first touchdown of the game with 8:32 left in the quarter as he ran in from 8 yards out. His counterpart in the backfield, rookie from Temple, Bernard Pierce scored with just one second left on the clock. He toed the sidelines as he took it in from 12 yards out. This occurred after he took an unnecessary roughness penalty that moved the ball from the 6 yard to the 21 yard line.

In the second quarter, the Browns started to make a comeback. They got a 32 yard field goal from their kicker Phil Dawson with 9:19 left until halftime to break the shutout at 14-3. Later in the quarter they failed to get in the end zone on a few more occasions. They wound up settling for field goals from 28 & 29 yards out as they made it a game going into the locker room trailing by five points at 14-9.

In the third quarter, the Browns' defense continued to dominate as they held the Ravens scoreless. The Browns tacked on another field goal from 33 yards out with 2:39 left to get within two at 14-12.

In the fourth quarter, the Browns took their first lead of the day with 8:48 left as Phil Dawson connected on a 41 yard field goal to give the Browns a 15-14 lead. The Browns defense was worn down as they allowed the Ravens to regain the lead. The Ravens awoke as they marched down the field on a nine play 81 yard drive that culminated with a 19 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Torrey Smith with 4:26 left in the quarter. They added the two point conversion as quarterback Joe Flacco found wide receiver Anquan Boldin to give the Ravens a 22-15 lead. After the Browns turned the ball over on downs deep in their own territory, the Ravens got a 43 yard field goal from kicker Justin Tucker to seal the deal, 25-15. Just like the Wizards the night before, the Browns found a way to lose.

That's the way it goes. After the game, we walked back to the car as we got ready for the long ride home.
We got in the car just before 5PM. On the way back we stopped off at Burger King for a fast dinner. We made a pit stop for gas as well in Pennsylvania so we didn't have to worry about waiting all night to find a gas station who had gas. We got back home at 1AM.

All things considered we had a great weekend. We adjusted to the circumstances we were given and we made the best of them.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty sees the Washington Wizards play their Home Opener against the Boston Celtics at the Verizon Center!

Prince at Verizon Center
I got up early Saturday morning so I could call Avis up to see if they had any cars available to rent. They said they did on a first come first served basis. I wound up getting a Crown Victoria for the weekend. I took a few buses and a train to get there. I arrived there just after 9AM. On my way there, I saw so many trees that got knocked down as a result of Hurricane Sandy. When I finally arrived at Avis which is located at a gas station, they still had no power and no gas. Despite that, cars were lined up all the way down the block waiting for them to get a supply of fuel. It was unbelievable. Once again, I counted my blessings.

I wound up getting the car with a quarter of a tank of gas. Thankfully I went to pick up the King and away we went. We drove into New Jersey as the remaining gas was dwindling away. We wisely decided to get on the NJ Turnpike for a little while. By doing so, we were able to luckily get gas. It wasn't easy but once again we were blessed. We had a car with a Pennsylvania license plate that ended in an odd number. At Noon in Northern New Jersey that day, they started allowing people to get gas with odd license plates only. We patiently waited on a line on the shoulder of the exit to the rest area for an hour and sixteen minutes starting at 12:07PM before we got our chance to get some gas. While we were waiting a state trooper looked at everybody's plates to make sure they were odd. The car behind me apparently wasn't so they were kicked off the line. We were so fortunate. Five minutes later at 1:28PM we finally got enough to get us to Laurel, Maryland which is located between Baltimore and Washington DC. I knew the gas was a lot cheaper there so we filled up before we continued on to DC.

We originally planned to go to see the University of Delaware play football on the way to DC but Hurricane Sandy spoiled that idea. We ironically past by the stadium area after we stopped off at McDonald's for an early dinner. We saw people heading back to their cars so the King yelled out and asked them who won. A few ladies responded it wasn't us. In other words, the Delaware Blue Hens lost to the visiting Towson Tigers. The King looked it up on his phone and we found out that they lost 34-27 in overtime. It was a long game. It seemed like a blessing in disguise that we couldn't make it.

We continued on as we finally got to DC just before 6PM. We went to see the Wizards play their home opener against the Boston Celtics at the Verizon Center.

Our friend Peter Agnew has season tickets for the Wizards was able to get us a pair of tickets at his season ticket price which worked out well for us. Unfortunately he was away so he couldn't join us. We were grateful for his kindness as always.

As for the game we saw, the Celtics raced out to a 17-2 lead. It appeared that the Wizards were going to get blown away. Surprisingly, the Wizards managed to hang around most of the game. They trailed 26-12 after the first quarter. They got within seven points at halftime, 49-42. After three quarters, they pulled within four at 71-67. In the fourth quarter with three and a half minutes to go, they tied the game at 84 as Jannero Pargo hit a basket. Moments later teammate Kevin Seraphin gave the Wizards their first lead of the game, 86-84. They didn't score again as Paul Pierce buried a three pointer to give the Celtics an 87-86 lead. They added a few throws late as they emerged victorious, 89-86 to spoil the Wizards' home opener.

After the game we drove to Somerset, PA where we spent the night before we continued onward to Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday.

Stay tuned for the special post that will recap the rest of this adventurous getaway.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty goes to Opening Night at MSG to see the Knicks host the World Champion Miami Heat!

MSG Transformation Phase 2
After their game at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn was postponed Thursday night due to Hurricane Sandy, the Knicks got to officially open their new season at home at Madison Square Garden on Friday night instead.

They were hosting the World Champion Miami Heat at the newly transformed Madison Square Garden phase two of three.

As for the latest phase in the transformation process, the Garden has taken on a different look especially in the seating bowl. In 1991, they added luxury suites around the very top of the arena. In phase two of the transformation, they've taken many of them out. In their place, they've added seats that extend all the way to the top of the building on the sides and the corners. The luxury suites have been moved to the middle level which is between the 100 level and the 200 level as it's now comprised. It should be noted that not all the luxury boxes are finished yet. Half of them are not. This is a work in progress as they continue to transform the Garden. Next year will be phase three. Once they finish that, the Garden will have a totally different look than it did in years past. It's taking shape as they've also moved the seats closer to the action so the sightlines are improved to see an event there. Furthermore, they've added nice cushioned seats throughout the seating bowl which makes the experience more comfortable for its patrons. The seats are all black except for the ones on the 400 level just below the West Balcony. Those are colored blue in honor of the iconic blue seats that the Garden was known for. That's where the working class people were notorious for sitting. Hopefully you'll get a chance to go to see the latest phase as progress continues to be made at the World's Most Famous Arena.

As for the game I saw, the Knicks came ready to play. With all the distractions from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the Knicks put on a clinic to help ease people's minds for a few hours in the wake of the disaster we had. It's going to be a long healing process but for one night was a nice relief.

The Knicks played inspired basketball from start to finish as they made the champs look like chumps on this night. The Knicks lead 33-17 after the first quarter which set the tone for the rest of the evening. They were a team on a mission and it showed. The last time they played the Miami Heat, they got knocked out of the first round of the playoffs. This was a little bit of a payback for them. Carmelo Anthony lead the way as he scored 30 points and he grabbed 10 rebounds. His teammates contributed as five other players pitched in. They scored in double figures to give the new look Knicks a balanced attack. The Knicks lead 55-44 at halftime. In the third quarter, they held their biggest lead of the game at 75-52 with 3:11 left. When it was all said and done, they came away with an easy 104-84 victory. With that being said, basketball was back at the mecca.

Stay tuned as I recap the wild weekend I had thanks to Sandy's destruction to the Northeast.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty w/o 10/29 in review

After I got home from MetLife Stadium Sunday night after the Jet game, I wound up staying home for two days thanks to Hurricane Sandy who was on her way up to NYC. While in the house I kept hearing howling sounds as the wind was whipping against the windows. It was very scary to say the least.

As a result, I couldn't go to work for two days. I would have gladly preferred to be at work. It wasn't easy having to stay home. I did get to catch up on things in the house so it wasn't a total waste of time.

Sandy finally calmed down but when she was done, she did plenty of damage. She destroyed lots of property and she inconvenienced many people in the process.

As for the King and I, we were extremely lucky. We didn't have any problems in the aftermath of this horrific storm.

I wish everybody could say the same. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. Many people lost power, some lost property and the City of New York was shut down. The subway which was suspended Sunday night as a precautionary measure at 7PM by the MTA and it didn't start running again until Thursday morning. When it finally did, it had limited service. The King and I were able to get from home to Midtown Manhattan without too much difficulty. For those who live and/or needed to get to Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn it was a nightmare. Those areas were hit very hard by Sandy. There was an incredible amount of flooding in those areas that made matters worse. Tunnels for the subway and the Path train that runs into New Jersey were clogged which is going to take lots of time to be repaired.

Wednesday I finally went back to work but I couldn't take the train to get there. I was forced to take a few buses to get into Manhattan. Then I had to walk the rest of the way. It took me two hours from when I left the house. Normally when I take the subway to work it takes me a half hour from the time I leave the house.
After seeing and hearing what many people went through and are still going through, I count my blessings. Besides the flooding, there was a fire that demolished people's property. This has been a very rough time for those of us who live in the Northeast. There seems to be no end in sight. Some people are still without power. This will take lots of time until things return to normal. In the meantime, we all have to help each other out so we can pull through and get back to living the way we're accustomed to.

With that being said, Thursday night after work I was originally planning to go to the Barclays Center in downtown Brooklyn but the basketball game between the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks was postponed due to Hurricane Sandy. Instead I came home after work and I relaxed and got ready for the busy weekend I had planned.

Friday I went to work. After I got back from lunch, I decided to call Avis to see if they would have a car for me to rent on Saturday morning. They told me they didn't have power and at that time they had no cars to rent. I was caught off guard. I didn't realize that this storm was going to affect me as far as going away was concerned. They told me to call them back early Saturday morning.

Stay tuned for the special posts that I'm going to do that will recap the adventurous weekend I had.

More importantly, if you were affected by Hurricane Sandy, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your families. I hope I can make a difference for you in your healing process. If so, let me know. I'll do my best to lift up your spirits.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty w/o 10/22 in review

Trenton Titans hockey
Monday right after midnight we drove back from Cincinnati after seeing the Bengal game. We stayed at Super 8 in Columbus again. We checked out of the hotel at 11AM that morning. After doing so, we went to Waffle House which was right next door for breakfast. Unfortunately the King and our pal Mike Carroll didn't enjoy their food. They had a bad experience. I didn't have a problem except for the horrible orange juice they gave me. I had it exchanged and I wound up having apple juice instead. I've been to Waffle House numerous times in the past. I don't remember having a bad experience. Hopefully there was an isolated incident.

After we got done eating, we went to a shopping center which had a Giant Eagle supermarket. My main goal was to see if we could get Mike Carroll some cans of Skyline Chili to bring home. We went inside and we looked around and we managed to get him what he wanted. I took a can for myself so I can make chili dogs when I get a chance at home. In addition, we got some goodies for the long car ride home. We finally got back on the road around 12:15PM.

We were 560 miles or so from NYC. I drove back through Akron then we picked up I-80 outside out of Youngstown, Ohio. We stopped off for dinner at a Burger King in Central Pennsylvania. We also stopped off for a gas a few times. We finally got back to Grand Central Station in Manhattan at 9:30PM where we dropped off Mike Carroll so he could catch his 9:56PM train back home which is in Brewster, NY. When we said our goodbyes to him, he said and I quote "you guys don't know how much I appreciate that you took me". He was so elated which is why I was so determined to take him with us.

After we dropped him off, the King and I went home. We got home around 9:45PM. We unpacked and relaxed the rest of the night. After getting some sleep, I got up in the morning and I returned the car rental to Avis before I went back to work. I wound up driving 1,616 miles safely.

After work Tuesday night I came home and I rested up.

Wednesday night after work I came home and I watched game one of the World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Detroit Tigers.

Thursday night after work I came home and I watched game two of the World Series.

Friday night after work I went out and I did my laundry.

Saturday afternoon the King and I went up to Upper Manhattan where we saw the Columbia Lions host the Yale Bulldogs at Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium. We were joined by a number of people we know. They included Frank Anichiarico, Bryan Gilligan, Manny Morales, Vincent Ascanio, Al Linderman and Pat Gorman. It turned out to be a nice social gathering.

In addition, we wound up seeing a very competitive football game too. Columbia drew first blood with 8:29 left in the first quarter when their place kicker Luke Eddy booted a 28 yard field goal to give the Lions' an early 3-0 lead. The score stayed that way until there was 13:34 left in the second quarter when Yale got on the scoreboard as freshman Tyler Varga ran in a touchdown from 28 yards out to make it a 7-3 game. With 8:13 left in the half, the Lions' Ryan Murphy tackled Varga in the end zone for a safety to cut the Bulldog lead to 7-5. It remained that way at halftime.

In the third quarter, Tyler Varga extended the Bulldog lead to 14-5 as he scored another touchdown. This time on a three yard run. The Lions continued to fight back. With 1:51 left in the quarter, wide receiver Jake Wanamaker caught a four yard pass to get the Lions back with in two at 14-12.

In the fourth quarter, the Lions regained the lead as their quarterback Sean Brackett ran in from the one yard line to give the Lions a 19-14 lead with 11:38 to go. The Bulldogs didn't roll over and play dead. They came right back as Tyler Varga continued to pile up yards on the ground as he enabled the Bulldogs to go back ahead of the Lions as he scored another touchdown this time from 25 yards out. The Bulldogs decided to go for the two point conversion as running back Mordecai Cargill ran in to give the Bulldogs a 22-19 lead. The Lions continued to persevere as they got the game winning touchdown with just 45 seconds to go as Marcorus Garrett caught a two yard pass on third and goal after he failed to run the ball in on the two previous tries. The Lions fought hard and they came away with a 26-22 victory. It should be noted that Tyler Varga finished with 220 yards rushing for the Bull Dogs in the losing effort.

After the game, the King and I were joined by Vincent Ascanio who decided to go with us as we took a NJ Transit train to Trenton, NJ where we saw some ECHL hockey. We went to the Sun National Bank Center which is the home of the Trenton Titans who are affiliated with the Philadelphia Flyers. Upon arrival, we were able to take advantage of a promotion they were having for people who are NHL season ticket holders. Since the King and I have season tickets for the NJ Devils we were able to get free tickets to the Titan game. It worked out for us. I filled out some information they requested and they gave me three vouchers which I exchanged at the box office for tickets to the game. We got the tickets and we went inside to see some hockey action while NHL players remain locked out.

The Titans were hosting the Toledo Walleye, who serve as a developmental team for the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks.

As for the game we saw, the Walleye were awarded a penalty shot while they were shorthanded 5:40 into the game. Willie Coetzee took the shot and he scored to give the Walleye a 1-0 lead. That was the only scoring in the period.

In the second period, defenseman Joey Ryan of the Walleye found the net for his first goal of the season to make it 2-0 after two periods.

In the third period, the Walleye scored two more goals within a 22 second span to make it 4-0. The Titans broke the shutout with 8:27 left in the game as they made it 4-1. The Walleye added an empty net goal to make the final score, 5-1.

It was nice to see a hockey game again. Hopefully the NHL will eventually come to their senses. If not, minor league hockey is a good and less expensive alternative.

We took the train back after the game and we arrived back at NY Penn Station just before midnight.
Sunday afternoon with Hurricane Sandy heading our way in the Northeast, the King and I met up with our pal Larry Peim by Penn Station. He drove us along with our friend Michael Abrams to MetLife Stadium where we went to see the Jets host the Miami Dolphins.

As for the game we saw, the Jets apparently forgot to show up. The first drive of the game, the Dolphins went right down the field. Their drive stalled but they got a 33 yard field goal from their kicker Dan Carpenter to take a 3-0 lead with 11:02 left in the first quarter. With 3:59 left, Olivier Vernon recovered a punt by Robert Malone that was blocked in the end zone to give the Dolphins a 10-0 lead.

In the second quarter, with 14:08 left running back Daniel Thomas from Kansas State ran in from three yards out to extend the Dolphin lead to 17-0. With 6:59 to go to half time, Dan Carpenter kicked a 39 yard field goal to make it 20-0.

At half time, perhaps the only highlight of the day for Jet fans, the Jets had a ceremony to retire former Jet Dennis Byrd's #90 jersey. On November 29, 1992 he played his last football game. He got hit and he was taken off the field on a stretcher. He was told he may never walk again. With his incredible attitude and determination, Dennis has defied the odds. He's now able to walk on his own. He's been an inspiration for past, present and future Jets to look up to. As a result, the Jets organization decided to honor him by retiring his jersey. It was a very moving ceremony. Unfortunately this current team couldn't get their act together on this day.

In the third quarter, the Jets took the opening drive down the field but they had to settle for a 38 yard field goal by Nick Folk which made it 20-3. The Dolphins responded by scoring another touchdown. This one by Anthony Fasano who caught a four yard pass from backup quarterback Matt Moore who replaced rookie Ryan Tannehill who got hurt in the first quarter when he got sacked by Calvin Pace. Dolphins went up, 27-3.

In the fourth quarter, the Jets' got a touchdown pass from Mark Sanchez who found wide receiver Chaz Schilens from five yards out to get the Jets closer at 27-9 with 7:20 left in the game. They failed to convert on the two point conversion. The Dolphins added another field goal by Dan Carpenter from 42 yards out to round out the scoring with 4:30 left as the Dolphins whipped the Jets, 30-9.

After the game, the King and I went home and we braced for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy which was heading our way.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman
