Royalty goes to Auburn Hills to see the Pistons after Lions football!

Prince at the Palace of Auburn Hills
After I had dinner with Paul Swaney, I arranged to meet up with my pal Domish who went to see college hockey at the Joe as they call it in Motown while we were watching football and eating. I walked back to the car after I said goodbye to Paul. I sent Domish a text and he said to meet him by the Greektown Casino which wasn't far from Ford Field. He took the People Mover which is the monorail that moves people around the downtown area of Detroit. I picked up around 6:25PM. We proceeded to drive out to Auburn Hills which is a suburb that's 30 miles north of downtown on I-75. We got off the exit that goes to The Palace of Auburn Hills which is the home of the Detroit Pistons. We had to park in the parking lot for $10 because there's no other option out there. After I parked the car, Domish and I parked towards the box office. Domish said a friend of his told him tickets should be $10 to get in. We were going to get on line when I heard somebody say and I quote "anybody need two tickets." I walked over to that person and I said I do. The guy handed me two free tickets for the game. Too bad Paul Swaney couldn't join us to see how easy it was to get tickets. It took literally a few seconds. Timing is everything. This time I was in the right place at the right time. Unlike at Ford Field, where I couldn't even get a reasonable offer to buy a ticket for the longest time. What a contrasting experience it was.

After we got the tickets we went inside to walk around and then we went upstairs near center court and we sat down and enjoyed the game as the Pistons were hosting the Milwaukee Bucks. The place wasn't too crowded. They announced a crowd of 14,219. It should be noted they have a special promotion on Sundays for families so that helped to enhance the actual attendance figure. The arena does hold over 22,000 and they used to sell out often in back in the day especially during the Bad Boys era when they won their championships. Those days, tickets were nearly impossible to come by. Nowadays they beg people to show up. We still got to see a professional basketball game for free.

As for the game we saw, the Pistons raced out to an early 13-0 lead. They wound up leading, 30-23 after the first quarter as the Bucks staged a comeback to get back into the game. At halftime, the Pistons got the lead back up to ten, 55-45. In the third quarter, the Bucks sliced the lead back to seven, 78-71. In the fourth quarter, the Pistons did their best to try and give the game away. The Bucks took a two point late but in the Pistons came back and they wound up beating the Bucks, 96-94. It turned out to be an entertaining game.

The Pistons got 20 points from Tayshaun Prince who led the way as four other players scored in double figures to help the Pistons escape with the win after blowing a big early lead.

As for the Bucks, they got a game high 30 points from guard Monta Ellis and forward Ersan Ilyasova came off the bench to finish with 24 points in the losing effort.

After the game, we drove to Coldwater, Michigan which is about 12 miles from the Indiana border and we spent the night at Super 8.

Stay tuned as I recap the way we spent the last day of 2012.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty w/o 1/24 in review‏

With my football season coming to an end, I went to Madison Square Garden after getting some sleep during the day to see the Knicks host the Washington Wizards.

As for the game I saw, the Wizards hung tough with the Knicks for most of the game then the Knicks put them away in the fourth quarter as they won 115-106!

Amar'e Stoudemire led the way with 30 points and 9 rebounds. Wilson Chandler added 25 points while Danilo Gallanari finished with 17 points.

Nick Young was the Wizards high scorer with 22 points. Recently acquired Rashard Lewis had 20 points. Rookie John Wall poured in 18 points and he dished out 9 assists.

After going back to work Tuesday I came home to rest up.

Wednesday night I braved the elements and I made the trek to Newark to see the Nets take on the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies led this one after the first quarter 32-16 then they gradually disappeared as the game wore on. They wound up losing, 93-88!

Anthony Morrow paced the Nets off the bench as he scored a team high 19 points. Brook Lopez added 17 points in the process.

As for the Grizzlies, Rudy Gay finished with 22 points and Zach Randolph had 20 points to go along with 16 rebounds in the loss.

Thursday night I went back to the Garden to see the return of the Miami Heat.

This time the Knicks emerged victorious, 93-88!

The Big Three was missing Chris Bosh. Dwayne Wade had a great game as he scored 34 points and he grabbed 16 rebounds but he missed 8 free throws which proved to be costly as the Heat came up short.

LeFraud once again heard the serenade of boos when he touched the ball. He shot only 7 for 24 and he finished with 24 points and he manage to collect 11 boards.

For the Knicks, Amar'e Stoudemire who was named one of the Eastern Conference starting All-Stars before the game. He went on to score 24 points to help the Knicks beat the Heat.

Rookie Landry Fields added 19 points, ripped down 13 rebounds and he handed out 6 assists. In the process, he became the first Knick rookie to do so since Walt Frazier did that feat way back in 1968.

Friday night I went to rest up for the busy weekend I had planned.

Saturday morning I went to Avis and I rented a car for the weekend.

I proceeded to drive to Astoria to pick up the King. After doing so, I drove into Manhattan to meet our friend Mike Carroll who joined us for the minor league hockey doubleheader we were seeing.

The first game was in Hershey, Pennsylvania at 2PM. The back to back Calder Cup Champion Hershey Bears were hosting the Charlotte Checkers.

As for the game we saw, the hometown Bears scored the only goal of the game when former NHL player Sheldon Souray lit the lamp midway through the third period to give the Bears the 1-0 victory.

After the game we drove to Reading, PA to see our second game at 7:05PM.

On the way to Reading we stopped off in Bethel, PA and we had dinner at the Midway Diner which is located conveniently right off Exit 16 on I-78.

After having a nice inexpensive full course meal we continued on to Reading.

We arrived just in time to make the opening faceoff between the visiting Greenville Road Warriors who relocated from Johnstown, PA this season and the Reading Royals on Penn State night.

To celebrate this special occasion, the Royals worn a special uniform that resembled the Nittany Lions. They had big numbers on both sides of their navy blue jerseys.

Unlike the game we saw in Hershey, the first goal came just 40 seconds into the game as the Royals took the early 1-0 lead. They added two more goals to make it 3-0 just past the midway mark of the first period.

The Road Warriors stormed back with 2 quick goals only 9 seconds apart later in the first period to get back into the game at 3-2.

After a scoreless second period, the Royals added an insurance goal early in the third period to make it 4-2. That's the way it ended as the Royals came away with the victory.

Needless to say, we all had a great time in the Keystone State.

Sunday morning the King and I picked up my good friend and big supporter of Royalty over the years, Manny Morales. It's always a pleasure to have Manny on board with us.

He saw my schedule on the blog and he contacted me so he could take a "royal" ride to Poughkeepsie, NY which is located in the Hudson Valley about 100 miles from NYC.

We went to see Manhattan College visit the Red Foxes of Marriott. On paper it wasn't the most attractive matchup since both teams are playing very bad so far this season.

As for the game we saw it was very competitive throughout the contest. Marist had a few chances to put the Jaspers of Manhattan away at the free throw line but they missed free throws down the stretch that allowed Manhattan to have a chance at an improbable win.

With just 2 seconds to play, the visiting Jaspers of Manhattan had to go the length of the court to score to tie or win the game.

Michael Alvarado dribbled the ball up to just before the halfcourt line and he threw the ball up towards the basket and it banked off the backboard and in to give the Jaspers an incredible 60-59 come from behind win.

Needless to say, the crowd was in stunned disbelief. I couldn't believe it either. What a finish we saw.

After the game we dropped Manny off in Manhattan and the King and I went to the Garden to see the Knicks play the Detroit Pistons.

I wound up returning the car to Avis before I headed to the Garden. I drove 582 miles over the weekend.

As for the Knick game, the Knicks wound up beating up the Pistons rather easily, 124-106!

Amar'e Stoudemire led the way with 33 points despite playing with a twisted ankle. Danilo Gallanari added 29 points while seldom used Timofey Mozgov came off the bench and poured in 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

For the Pistons, Ben Gordon scored 35 points and Greg Monroe added 15 points to go along with his 17 boards in the defeat.

As always, thank you for reading and following the adventures of Royalty.

If and when you get tired of reading about it and you want to be part of it just let me know so I can arrange to have you join us.

Royalty w/o 1/17 in review

Monday was Martin Luther King Day and thankfully I was off from work.

I went to Madison Square Garden for the traditional MLK Day game as the Knicks played host to the Phoenix Suns.

The Knicks had beaten the Suns on their recent West Coast road trip so the Suns were looking to return the favor.

On this afternoon, they did just that as they beat the Knicks, 129-121 in an entertaining affair.

Despite getting a season high 41 points from former Sun Amar'e Stoudemire, the Knicks still came up short. Wilson Chandler added 23 points in the defeat.

As for the Suns, newly acquired Vince Carter led the way with 29 points while teammate Grant Hill had 25 points. Former Knick Channing Frye finished with 18 points for the victorious Suns.

Tuesday night after work turned out to be a historical night for myself and Royalty in general as I was interviewed on Internet TV.

I had the privilege and honor of sharing some time with Rick Morris in the FDH Lounge on the night of the 4th anniversary of his great show.

I was given an opportunity to scratch the surface by giving Rick and his audience a brief overview of how Royalty rolls.

I look forward to talking to Rick in the near future to keep him abreast of our whereabouts. The King was unable to join me because he was getting his nightly sporting event fix so he can continue to live up to his name.

I do hope that the next time he can make himself available so he can elaborate on the amazing partnership we've had for the last 25 years.

I plan to get my interview linked up so please stay tuned for that.

If you couldn't listen live you will be able to listen at your convenience once it's up and running.

If you want to become a regular listener to the FDH Lounge please feel free to tune in on Tuesday nights from 7-10PM.

Rick is a super guy and I know you won't be wasting your time.

Wednesday night after work I went out to Newark to see the Nets play the Utah Jazz.

A co-worker of mine, Bart DiNardo told me a few weeks prior that he was going to the game too. He said his mother works out at the gym with C.J. Miles of the Utah Jazz. He said that C.J. hooked his mother up with courtside seats for the game.

Bart is a good kid and proud follower of my whereabouts. He approached me and he asked me how do I get to the game. I responded and told him to come with me. True to my word, he did just that. I got him out there with no problem. He had to meet his parents at the arena.

When I saw him the next day at work he told me what an amazing time he had. He got to go into the Jazz locker room after the game. What a thrill it was for him.

I'm happy I was able to make sure he got to the arena without a hassle.

As for the game, the Nets surprised the Jazz, 103-95!

The Nets were led by Brooks Lopez who had 20 points. Sasha Vujacic poured in 15 of his own.

As for the Jazz, Al Jefferson led all scorers with 21 points while Deron Williams had 20. C.J. Miles finished with 13 in the loss.

Thursday night I was back in Newark this time for the Devils as they hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Penguins were missing their two superstars, Sidney Crosby and Evengi Malkin.

As a result, they got shut out by the Devils, 2-0!

Martin Brodeur notched his 114th career shutout which extended his own record for most shutouts by a goaltender.

On my way home, I was contacted by a guy named Dave Swanson who recently started a business selling posters. They have a map of the country which allows you to mark off the different NFL stadiums that you have visited. I think it's a cool idea.

As a result, I added his website to my expanding blog list for your viewing pleasure. Please feel free to check it out. If you're a football fan, you'll appreciate it. If not, it will give you motivation to become one.

Friday night after work I went to Newark to see the Nets play the Detroit Pistons.

I arranged to have my Cousin Andy join us. It was great to see him again. As usual, he enjoyed seeing the King and I.

As for the game, the Nets wound up winning again. This time they won, 89-74!

Brook Lopez led the way for the Nets with 15 points. Devin Harris scored a dozen.

For the Pistons, Tayshaun Prince finished with 16 points and Rodney Stuckey poured in 14.

Saturday night I wrapped up going to Newark for a fourth straight night when I saw the Dallas Mavericks visit the Nets.

This was a seesaw battle most of the night. The Nets had a lead in the fourth quarter but with 6 seconds to go, the Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki was able to rattle a shot in as it bounced around the rim and it finally fell in to give the Mavericks the win, 87-86!

The Nets had a final shot but they missed the basket badly as they came up short.

Stay tuned as I'll be doing a special post detailing the trip to Pittsburgh for the AFC Championship Game.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty fittingly closes out the weekend at the Palace!

Prince at the Palace

After departing downtown Detroit, Royalty drove up I-75 North 30 miles to get to the Palace of Auburn Hills for some NBA basketball. The Detroit Pistons were hosting the Golden State Warriors at 6PM.

I wound up parking the car in the parking lot at 5:35PM.

As for the game we saw, the Pistons unlike the Lions found a way to win as they beat the Warriors, 102-97.

Another great weekend was officially in the books. Monday morning we flew back home and I went right into work upon arrival.

Thank you for reading.

Don't forgot if you want to see this operation firsthand then you should let me know so I can arrange to make it happen for you.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

Royalty w/o 10/25 in review

After catching up on rest Monday and Tuesday night after work, I was ready for basketball to start.

Wednesday night after work I went out to Newark, NJ to see the Nets play their first game at their new temporary home, the Prudential Center. It was the 56th NBA arena that I've seen a game in.

As for the game, the Detroit Pistons were playing the Nets on Opening Night.

This was a closely contested game throughout. In the end, Anthony Morrow hit the winning shot as the Nets came from behind to get into the win column first with a 101-98 win.

Last season the Nets didn't win their first game for a few months.

Brook Lopez led all scorers with 25 points and Devin Harris added 22. For the Pistons, Tayshaun Prince, Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villanueva each had 14 points in the loss.

After another night off Thursday, I returned to the Prudential Center Friday night after work.

The Sacramento Kings were in town to play the Nets. This game was similar to Wednesday night.

The Net hung tough and came back to win again. This time they won 106-100.

Brook Lopez had 29 points and Devin Harris poured in 21 to lead the way. For the Kings, Francisco Garcia and Tyreke Evans added 18 points each in the losing effort.

Stop the season, the Nets are 2-0!

Saturday I drove up to New Haven, Connecticut to see the Columbia Lions play the Yale Bulldogs at the Yale Bowl with the King.

It was a perfect opportunity for us to see the Yale Bowl for the first time.

We've previously seen games in the Ivy League at Princeton and Penn.

Speaking of Princeton, when we arrived in the seating area we heard a few people get our attention. We weren't alone.

We saw a few members of our crew in the house, they were Steve Tepperman aka "Princeton Steve" and Pat Gorman.

They were sitting near midfield so we went up and joined them.

As for the game, Yale raced out to a 31-7 lead at halftime. In the second half, Columbia came roaring back to cut the lead to 3, 31-28. Unfortunately for them, that's the way it remained as the Bulldogs hung on for the narrow victory.

Saturday night we drove back to NYC to see the new look New York Knicks play the Portland Trailblazers in their home opener at Madison Square Garden.

The Knicks with a revamped roster which included newcomers Amaure Stoudemire, Raymond Felton, Timofey Mozgov and Landry Fields still weren't able to hold an eight point lead with 5 minutes to go.

They wound up losing the opener 100-95 in front of a sellout crowd.

The fan base seemed to be back at least on this night.

Brandon Roy lead the way for the Trailblazers with 29 points, LaMarcus Aldridge added 20 points and Andre Miller chipped with 19 to blaze the trail to victory.

For the Knicks, Wilson Chandler scored 22 points off the bench. Amaure Stoudemire had 18 points in his home debut.

Sunday I went to the New Meadowlands Stadium looking a treat on Halloween. I would had been better off staying home. I could have knocked on some doors and looked for candy instead.

The Jets thought it was Easter as they laid an egg. After having an off week, the Jets should have came out ready to play but they didn't.

The weather conditions were brutal. The wind was gusting and whipping up throughout the game. The Jets game plan left a lot to be desired in this one. They should have been running the ball more especially against the Packers defense who's not good against stopping the run.

The Jets wound up throwing the ball a lot more than expected. Mark Sanchez didn't have a good game. The Jet defense played well but the offense got shut out by the Packers who won the game, 9-0!

Thank you for reading.

Gary Herman

Royalty is going to Detroit Rock City in November!

In November, Royalty will be doing a Motown weekend.

The game plan is as follows:

The King and our friend, Frank Anichiarico will be joining us as we go head to Detroit to see Frank's beloved Lions and our Jets play that weekend and then some.

Saturday, November 6th we have a flight booked on Delta Airlines that departs NY LaGuardia Airport at 6:05AM Eastern Time and it's scheduled to land in Detroit, Michigan at 8:01AM Eastern Time.

Upon arrival, I'll be renting a car and we're going to drive to East Lansing to see the Michigan State Spartans play the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers  in a college football game that hopefully kicks off at Noon local time. Please note the game time is still listed as TBA.

In addition, the University of Illnois plays Michigan at the Big House that day too. That game time is also TBA. We've been there done that. But if somebody wants to go there let me know. I'll drop you off in Ann Arbor and pick you up.

After the college football game, we have a minor league hockey game in nearby Toledo, Ohio. The Toledo Walleye of the ECHL host the Kalamazoo Wings at 7PM that night. That makes for a convenient doubleheader assuming the football game is an early start.

Sunday, November 7th, we'll be back in Detroit at Ford Field to see the Detroit Lions take on the Jets. Kickoff is scheduled for 1PM local time.

After the game, we're driving 30 miles North on I-75 to Auburn Hills to see some NBA action. The Golden State Warriors with ex-Knick David Lee are in town to play the Detroit Pistons at 6PM.

Monday, November 8th we'll be flying home. Our flight on Delta Airlines departs Detroit at 7:25AM Eastern Time and lands at LaGuardia at 9:17AM Eastern Time. Upon arrival, I'm off to work.

Please feel free to check back for all the details of how it turned out.

If you want to join us, please let me know so I can arrange to make it happen.

Thank you for reading.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman
