The other day I found out the great news I was waiting to hear for almost two months. That is Jason Grilli is coming back to the Major Leagues where he belongs.
Thanks to a special clause in his contract and his great work with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, the AAA affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies this season, he got the call he's been waiting for.
Jason has fought long and hard for this day to come. He overcame a knee injury which forced him out of action for the entire 2010 season. He was also slowed down by a minor injury back in May this year. Despite that minor setback, he's back.
He will be joining the Pittsburgh Pirates tomorrow when they open a series against their division rival, the St. Louis Cardinals.
The irony of the situation is that Jason will be reunited with his old manager Clint Hurdle who managed the Colorado Rockies back in 2008 when Jason pitched for them.
In addition, the big royal road trip starts in Pittsburgh on Saturday night. With that being said, the timing for Jason in my eyes couldn't have come at a better time. I hope to be able to see him again during batting practice. If I don't, I hope I get to see his Pirates' debut in relief.
Regardless if I see him in person during batting practice and/or on the mound, I want to wish him only the very best in the future.
The lesson to be learned here is that perseverance pays off in the long run. Don't give up on your dreams. Keep plugging away and you'll eventually make them happen.
Jason did and now he will continue to strike out the competition on and off the field.
I'll be tracking his appearances every game he pitches as the Pirates continue their Cinderella season in Pittsburgh. Let's Go Bucs!
